CJB 1 The festival of Shavu'ot arrived, and the believers all gathered together in one place. NIV 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. CJB 2 Suddenly there came a sound from the sky like the roar of a violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. NIV 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. CJB 3 Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire, which separated and came to rest on each one of them. NIV 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. CJB 4 They were all filled with the Ruach HaKodesh and began to talk in different languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. NIV 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. CJB 5 Now there were staying in Yerushalayim religious Jews from every nation under heaven. NIV 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. CJB 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd gathered; they were confused, because each one heard the believers speaking in his own language. NIV 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. CJB 7 Totally amazed, they asked, "How is this possible? Aren't all these people who are speaking from the Galil? NIV 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? CJB 8 How is it that we hear them speaking in our native languages? NIV 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? CJB 9 We are Parthians, Medes, Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Y'hudah, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, NIV 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, CJB 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome; NIV 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome CJB 11 Jews by birth and proselytes; Jews from Crete and from Arabia. . . ! How is it that we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things God has done?" NIV 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" CJB 12 Amazed and confused, they all went on asking each other, "What can this mean?" NIV 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" CJB 13 But others made fun of them and said, "They've just had too much wine!" NIV 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. " CJB 14 Then Kefa stood up with the Eleven and raised his voice to address them: "You Judeans, and all of you staying here in Yerushalayim! Let me tell you what this means! Listen carefully to me! NIV 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. CJB 15 "These people aren't drunk, as you suppose - it's only nine in the morning. NIV 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! CJB 16 No, this is what was spoken about through the prophet Yo'el: NIV 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: CJB 17 'ADONAI says: "In the Last Days, I will pour out from my Spirit upon everyone. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. NIV 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. CJB 18 Even on my slaves, both men and women, will I pour out from my Spirit in those days; and they will prophesy. NIV 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. CJB 19 I will perform miracles in the sky above and signs on the earth below blood, fire and thick smoke. NIV 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. CJB 20 The sun will become dark and the moon blood before the great and fearful Day of ADONAI comes. NIV 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. CJB 21 And then, whoever calls on the name of ADONAI will be saved."' NIV 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' CJB 22 "Men of Isra'el! Listen to this! Yeshua from Natzeret was a man demonstrated to you to have been from God by the powerful works, miracles and signs that God performed through him in your presence. You yourselves know this. NIV 22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. CJB 23 This man was arrested in accordance with God's predetermined plan and foreknowledge; and, through the agency of persons not bound by the Torah, you nailed him up on a stake and killed him! NIV 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. CJB 24 "But God has raised him up and freed him from the suffering of death; it was impossible that death could keep its hold on him. NIV 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. CJB 25 For David says this about him: 'I saw ADONAI always before me, for he is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken. NIV 25 David said about him: " 'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. CJB 26 For this reason, my heart was glad; and my tongue rejoiced; and now my body too will live on in the certain hope NIV 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, CJB 27 that you will not abandon me to Sh'ol or let your Holy One see decay. NIV 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. CJB 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; you will fill me with joy by your presence.' NIV 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' CJB 29 "Brothers, I know I can say to you frankly that the patriarch David died and was buried - his tomb is with us to this day. NIV 29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. CJB 30 Therefore, since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that one of his descendants would sit on his throne, NIV 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. CJB 31 he was speaking in advance about the resurrection of the Messiah, that it was he who was not abandoned in Sh'ol and whose flesh did not see decay. NIV 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. CJB 32 God raised up this Yeshua! And we are all witnesses of it! NIV 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. CJB 33 "Moreover, he has been exalted to the right hand of God; has received from the Father what he promised, namely, the Ruach HaKodesh; and has poured out this gift, which you are both seeing and hearing. NIV 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. CJB 34 For David did not ascend into heaven. But he says, NIV 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand CJB 35 'ADONAI said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' NIV 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." ' CJB 36 Therefore, let the whole house of Isra'el know beyond doubt that God has made him both Lord and Messiah - this Yeshua, whom you executed on a stake!" NIV 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." CJB 37 On hearing this, they were stung in their hearts; and they said to Kefa and the other emissaries, "Brothers, what should we do?" NIV 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" CJB 38 Kefa answered them, "Turn from sin, return to God, and each of you be immersed on the authority of Yeshua the Messiah into forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Ruach HaKodesh! NIV 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. CJB 39 For the promise is for you, for your children, and for those far away - as many as ADONAI our God may call!" NIV 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call." CJB 40 He pressed his case with many other arguments and kept pleading with them, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation!" NIV 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." CJB 41 So those who accepted what he said were immersed, and there were added to the group that day about three thousand people. NIV 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. CJB 42 They continued faithfully in the teaching of the emissaries, in fellowship, in breaking bread and in the prayers. NIV 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. CJB 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many miracles and signs took place through the emissaries. NIV 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. CJB 44 All those trusting in Yeshua stayed together and had everything in common; NIV 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. CJB 45 in fact, they sold their property and possessions and distributed the proceeds to all who were in need. NIV 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. CJB 46 Continuing faithfully and with singleness of purpose to meet in the Temple courts daily, and breaking bread in their several homes, they shared their food in joy and simplicity of heart, NIV 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, CJB 47 praising God and having the respect of all the people. And day after day the Lord kept adding to them those who were being saved. NIV 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
