RSV 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. NIV 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. RSV 2 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. NIV 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. RSV 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. NIV 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. RSV 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. NIV 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" RSV 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" NIV 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" RSV 13 But others mocking said, "They are filled with new wine." NIV 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. " RSV 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. NIV 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. RSV 15 For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day; NIV 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! RSV 16 but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: NIV 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: RSV 17 'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; NIV 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. RSV 18 yea, and on my menservants and my maidservants in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. NIV 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. RSV 19 And I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth beneath, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; NIV 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. RSV 20 the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and manifest day. RSV 21 And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' NIV 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' RSV 22 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know-- NIV 22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. RSV 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. NIV 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. RSV 24 But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. NIV 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. RSV 25 For David says concerning him, 'I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; NIV 25 David said about him: " 'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. RSV 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will dwell in hope. NIV 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, RSV 27 For thou wilt not abandon my soul to Hades, nor let thy Holy One see corruption. NIV 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. RSV 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou wilt make me full of gladness with thy presence.' NIV 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' RSV 29 "Brethren, I may say to you confidently of the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. NIV 29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. RSV 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, NIV 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. RSV 31 he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. NIV 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. RSV 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. NIV 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. RSV 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear. NIV 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." ' RSV 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." NIV 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." RSV 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" NIV 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" RSV 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. NIV 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. RSV 39 For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him." NIV 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call." RSV 40 And he testified with many other words and exhorted them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation." NIV 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." RSV 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. NIV 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. RSV 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. RSV 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts, NIV 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, RSV 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. NIV 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.
