Acts 2

WNT 1 At length, on the day of the Harvest Festival, they had all met in one place; NIV 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. WNT 2 when suddenly there came from the sky a sound as of a strong rushing blast of wind. This filled the whole house where they were sitting; NIV 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. WNT 3 and they saw tongues of what looked like fire distributing themselves over the assembly, and on the head of each person a tongue alighted. NIV 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. WNT 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in foreign languages according as the Spirit gave them words to utter. NIV 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. WNT 5 Now there were Jews residing in Jerusalem, devout men from every part of the world. NIV 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. WNT 6 So when this noise was heard, they came crowding together, and were amazed because everyone heard his own language spoken. NIV 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. WNT 7 They were beside themselves with wonder, and exclaimed, "Are not all these speakers Galilaeans? NIV 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? WNT 8 How then does each of us hear his own native language spoken by them? NIV 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? WNT 9 Some of us are Parthians, Medes, Elamites. Some are inhabitants of Mesopotamia, of Judaea or Cappadocia, of Pontus or the Asian Province, of Phrygia or Pamphylia, NIV 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, WNT 10 of Egypt or of the parts of Africa towards Cyrene. Others are visitors from Rome--being either Jews or converts from heathenism--and others are Cretans or Arabians. NIV 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome WNT 11 Yet we all alike hear these Galilaeans speaking in our own language about the wonderful things which God has done." NIV 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" WNT 12 They were all astounded and bewildered, and asked one another, "What can this mean?" NIV 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" WNT 13 But others, scornfully jeering, said, "They are brim-full of sweet wine." NIV 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. " WNT 14 Peter however, together with the Eleven, stood up and addressed them in a loud voice. "Men of Judaea, and all you inhabitants of Jerusalem," he said, "be in no uncertainty about this matter but pay attention to what I say. NIV 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. WNT 15 For this is not intoxication, as you suppose, it being only the third hour of the day. NIV 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! WNT 16 But that which was predicted through the Prophet Joel has happened: NIV 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: WNT 17 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, God says, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall have dreams; NIV 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. WNT 18 and even upon My bondservants, both men and women, at that time, I will pour out My Spirit, and they shall prophesy. NIV 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. WNT 19 I will display marvels in the sky above, and signs on the earth below, blood and fire, and pillars of smoke. NIV 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. WNT 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, to usher in the day of the Lord-- that great and illustrious day; NIV 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. WNT 21 and every one who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' NIV 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' WNT 22 "Listen, Israelites, to what I say. Jesus, the Nazarene, a man accredited to you from God by miracles and marvels and signs which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know, Him-- NIV 22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. WNT 23 delivered up through God's settled purpose and foreknowledge--you by the hands of Gentiles have nailed to a cross and have put to death. NIV 23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. WNT 24 But God has raised Him to life, having terminated the throes of death, for in fact it was not possible for Him to be held fast by death. NIV 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. WNT 25 For David says in reference to Him, "`I constantly fixed my eyes upon the Lord, because He is at my right hand in order that I may continue unshaken. NIV 25 David said about him: " 'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. WNT 26 For this reason my heart is glad and my tongue exults. My body also shall rest in hope. NIV 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, WNT 27 For Thou wilt not leave me in the Unseen World forsaken, nor give up Thy holy One to undergo decay. NIV 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. WNT 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of Life: Thou wilt fill me with gladness in Thy presence.' NIV 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' WNT 37 Stung to the heart by these words, they said to Peter and the rest of the Apostles, "Brethren, what are we to do?" NIV 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" WNT 38 "Repent," replied Peter, "and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, with a view to the remission of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. NIV 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. WNT 39 For to you belongs the promise, and to your children, and to all who are far off, whoever the Lord our God may call."
