Acts 22

CJB 1 "Brothers and fathers! Listen to me as I make my defense before you now!" NIV 1 "Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense." CJB 2 When they heard him speaking to them in Hebrew, they settled down more; so he continued: NIV 2 When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet. Then Paul said: CJB 3 "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city and trained at the feet of Gamli'el in every detail of the Torah of our forefathers. I was a zealot for God, as all of you are today. NIV 3 "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. Under Gamaliel I was thoroughly trained in the law of our fathers and was just as zealous for God as any of you are today. CJB 4 I persecuted to death the followers of this Way, arresting both men and women and throwing them in prison. NIV 4 I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, CJB 5 The cohen hagadol and the whole Sanhedrin can also testify to this. Indeed, after receiving letters from them to their colleagues in Dammesek, I was on my way there in order to arrest the ones in that city too and bring them back to Yerushalayim for punishment. NIV 5 as also the high priest and all the Council can testify. I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. CJB 6 "As I was traveling and approaching Dammesek, around noon, suddenly a brilliant light from heaven flashed all around me! NIV 6 "About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. CJB 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Sha'ul! Sha'ul! Why do you keep persecuting me?' NIV 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, 'Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?' CJB 8 I answered, 'Sir, who are you?' 'I am Yeshua from Natzeret,' he said to me, 'and you are persecuting me!' NIV 8 " 'Who are you, Lord?' I asked. " 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,' he replied. CJB 9 Those who were with me did see the light, but they didn't hear the voice of the one who was speaking to me. NIV 9 My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me. CJB 10 I said 'What should I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Get up, and go into Dammesek, and there you will be told about everything that has been laid out for you to do.' NIV 10 " 'What shall I do, Lord?' I asked. " 'Get up,' the Lord said, 'and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.' CJB 11 I had been blinded by the brightness of the light, so my companions led me by the hand into Dammesek. NIV 11 My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me. CJB 12 "A man named Hananyah, an observant follower of the Torah who was highly regarded by the entire Jewish community there, NIV 12 "A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. CJB 13 came to me, stood by me and said, 'Brother Sha'ul, see again!' And at that very moment, I recovered my sight and saw him. NIV 13 He stood beside me and said, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very moment I was able to see him. CJB 14 He said, 'The God of our fathersy determined in advance that you should know his will, see the Tzaddik and hear his voice; NIV 14 "Then he said: 'The God of our fathers has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. CJB 15 because you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard. NIV 15 You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. CJB 16 So now, what are you waiting for? Get up, immerse yourself and have your sins washed away as you call on his name.' NIV 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.' CJB 17 "After I had returned to Yerushalayim, it happened that as I was praying in the Temple, I went into a trance, NIV 17 "When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance CJB 18 and I saw Yeshua. 'Hurry!' he said to me, 'Get out of Yerushalayim immediately, because they will not accept what you have to say about me.' NIV 18 and saw the Lord speaking. 'Quick!' he said to me. 'Leave Jerusalem immediately, because they will not accept your testimony about me.' CJB 19 I said, 'Lord, they know themselves that in every synagogue I used to imprison and flog those who trusted in you; NIV 19 " 'Lord,' I replied, 'these men know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. CJB 20 also that when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I was standing there too, in full agreement; I was even looking after the clothes of the ones who were killing him!' NIV 20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.' CJB 21 But he said, 'Get going! For I am going to send you far away - to the Goyim!'" NIV 21 "Then the Lord said to me, 'Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.' " CJB 22 They had been listening to him up to this point; but now they shouted at the top of their lungs, "Rid the earth of such a man! He's not fit to live!" NIV 22 The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, "Rid the earth of him! He's not fit to live!" CJB 23 They were screaming, waving their clothes and throwing dust into the air; NIV 23 As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, CJB 24 so the commander ordered him brought into the barracks and directed that he be interrogated and whipped, in order to find out why they were yelling at him like this. NIV 24 the commander ordered Paul to be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and questioned in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. CJB 25 But as they were stretching him out with thongs to be flogged, Sha'ul said to the captain standing by, "Is it legal for you to whip a man who is a Roman citizen and hasn't even had a trial?" NIV 25 As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, "Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn't even been found guilty?" CJB 26 When the captain heard that, he went and reported it to the commander, "Do you realize what you're doing? This man is a Roman citizen!" NIV 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. "What are you going to do?" he asked. "This man is a Roman citizen." CJB 27 The commander came and said to Sha'ul, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes," he said. NIV 27 The commander went to Paul and asked, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes, I am," he answered. CJB 28 The commander replied, "I bought this citizenship for a sizeable sum of money." "But I was born to it," Sha'ul said. NIV 28 Then the commander said, "I had to pay a big price for my citizenship." "But I was born a citizen," Paul replied. CJB 29 At once the men who had been about to interrogate him drew back from him; and the commander was afraid too, because he realized that he had put this man who was a Roman citizen in chains. NIV 29 Those who were about to question him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains. CJB 30 However, the next day, since he wanted to know the specific charge the Judeans were bringing against him, he released him and ordered the head cohanim and the whole Sanhedrin to meet. Then he brought Sha'ul down and put him in front of them. NIV 30 The next day, since the commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and had him stand before them.
