Acts 4:13-31

RSV 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they wondered; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus. NIV 13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. RSV 14 But seeing the man that had been healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. NIV 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. RSV 15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred with one another, NIV 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. RSV 16 saying, "What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is manifest to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. NIV 16 "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it. RSV 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to any one in this name." NIV 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name." RSV 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. NIV 18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. RSV 19 But Peter and John answered them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; NIV 19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. RSV 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard." NIV 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." RSV 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people; for all men praised God for what had happened. NIV 21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. RSV 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. NIV 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old. RSV 23 When they were released they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. NIV 23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. RSV 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, "Sovereign Lord, who didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, NIV 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. RSV 25 who by the mouth of our father David, thy servant, didst say by the Holy Spirit, 'Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples imagine vain things? NIV 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: " 'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? RSV 26 The kings of the earth set themselves in array, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed' -- NIV 26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. ' RSV 27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, NIV 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. RSV 28 to do whatever thy hand and thy plan had predestined to take place. NIV 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. RSV 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to thy servants to speak thy word with all boldness, NIV 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. RSV 30 while thou stretchest out thy hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of thy holy servant Jesus." NIV 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus." RSV 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness. NIV 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
