Amos 5:18-27

NLT 18 How terrible it will be for you who say, "If only the day of the LORD were here! For then the LORD would rescue us from all our enemies." But you have no idea what you are wishing for. That day will not bring light and prosperity, but darkness and disaster. NIV 18 Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD! Why do you long for the day of the LORD? That day will be darkness, not light. NLT 19 In that day you will be like a man who runs from a lion -- only to meet a bear. After escaping the bear, he leans his hand against a wall in his house -- and is bitten by a snake. NIV 19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. NLT 20 Yes, the day of the LORD will be a dark and hopeless day, without a ray of joy or hope. NIV 20 Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light-- pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness? NLT 21 "I hate all your show and pretense -- the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies. NIV 21 "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. NLT 22 I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won't even notice all your choice peace offerings. NIV 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. NLT 23 Away with your hymns of praise! They are only noise to my ears. I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is. NIV 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. NLT 24 Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, a river of righteous living that will never run dry." NIV 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! NLT 25 "Was it to me you were bringing sacrifices and offerings during the forty years in the wilderness, Israel? NIV 25 "Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? NLT 26 No, your real interest was in your pagan gods -- Sakkuth your king god and Kaiwan your star god -- the images you yourselves made. NIV 26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god-- which you made for yourselves. NLT 27 So I will send you into exile, to a land east of Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is God Almighty. NIV 27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is God Almighty.
