Colossians 3

MSG 1 So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. NIV 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. MSG 2 Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ - that's where the action is. See things from his perspective. NIV 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. MSG 3 Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life - even though invisible to spectators - is with Christ in God. He is your life. NIV 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. MSG 4 When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you'll show up, too - the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ. NIV 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. MSG 5 And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That's a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. NIV 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. MSG 6 It's because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger. NIV 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. MSG 7 It wasn't long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. NIV 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. MSG 8 But you know better now, so make sure it's all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk. NIV 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. MSG 9 Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire. NIV 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices MSG 10 Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. NIV 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. MSG 11 Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ. NIV 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. MSG 12 So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. NIV 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. MSG 13 Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. NIV 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. MSG 14 And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. NIV 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. MSG 15 Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. NIV 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. MSG 16 Let the Word of Christ - the Message - have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! NIV 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. MSG 17 Let every detail in your lives - words, actions, whatever - be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way. NIV 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. MSG 18 Wives, understand and support your husbands by submitting to them in ways that honor the Master. NIV 18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. MSG 19 Husbands, go all out in love for your wives. Don't take advantage of them. NIV 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. MSG 20 Children, do what your parents tell you. This delights the Master no end. NIV 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. MSG 21 Parents, don't come down too hard on your children or you'll crush their spirits. NIV 21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. MSG 22 Servants, do what you're told by your earthly masters. And don't just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. NIV 22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. MSG 23 Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, NIV 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, MSG 24 confident that you'll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you're serving is Christ. NIV 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. MSG 25 The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being Christian doesn't cover up bad work. NIV 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.
