Deuteronomy 33

RSV 1 This is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. NIV 1 This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced on the Israelites before his death. RSV 2 He said, "The LORD came from Sinai, and dawned from Se'ir upon us; he shone forth from Mount Paran, he came from the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand. NIV 2 He said: "The LORD came from Sinai and dawned over them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran. He came with myriads of holy ones from the south, from his mountain slopes. RSV 3 Yea, he loved his people; all those consecrated to him were in his hand; so they followed in thy steps, receiving direction from thee, NIV 3 Surely it is you who love the people; all the holy ones are in your hand. At your feet they all bow down, and from you receive instruction, RSV 4 when Moses commanded us a law, as a possession for the assembly of Jacob. NIV 4 the law that Moses gave us, the possession of the assembly of Jacob. RSV 5 Thus the LORD became king in Jesh'urun, when the heads of the people were gathered, all the tribes of Israel together. NIV 5 He was king over Jeshurun when the leaders of the people assembled, along with the tribes of Israel. RSV 6 "Let Reuben live, and not die, nor let his men be few." NIV 6 "Let Reuben live and not die, nor his men be few." RSV 7 And this he said of Judah: "Hear, O LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him in to his people. With thy hands contend for him, and be a help against his adversaries." NIV 7 And this he said about Judah: "Hear, O LORD, the cry of Judah; bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause. Oh, be his help against his foes!" RSV 8 And of Levi he said, "Give to Levi thy Thummim, and thy Urim to thy godly one, whom thou didst test at Massah, with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Mer'ibah; NIV 8 About Levi he said: "Your Thummim and Urim belong to the man you favored. You tested him at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah. RSV 9 who said of his father and mother, 'I regard them not'; he disowned his brothers, and ignored his children. For they observed thy word, and kept thy covenant. NIV 9 He said of his father and mother, 'I have no regard for them.' He did not recognize his brothers or acknowledge his own children, but he watched over your word and guarded your covenant. RSV 10 They shall teach Jacob thy ordinances, and Israel thy law; they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt offering upon thy altar. NIV 10 He teaches your precepts to Jacob and your law to Israel. He offers incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar. RSV 11 Bless, O LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands; crush the loins of his adversaries, of those that hate him, that they rise not again." NIV 11 Bless all his skills, O LORD, and be pleased with the work of his hands. Smite the loins of those who rise up against him; strike his foes till they rise no more." RSV 12 Of Benjamin he said, "The beloved of the LORD, he dwells in safety by him; he encompasses him all the day long, and makes his dwelling between his shoulders." NIV 12 About Benjamin he said: "Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders." RSV 13 And of Joseph he said, "Blessed by the LORD be his land, with the choicest gifts of heaven above, and of the deep that couches beneath, NIV 13 About Joseph he said: "May the LORD bless his land with the precious dew from heaven above and with the deep waters that lie below; RSV 14 with the choicest fruits of the sun, and the rich yield of the months, NIV 14 with the best the sun brings forth and the finest the moon can yield; RSV 15 with the finest produce of the ancient mountains, and the abundance of the everlasting hills, NIV 15 with the choicest gifts of the ancient mountains and the fruitfulness of the everlasting hills; RSV 16 with the best gifts of the earth and its fulness, and the favor of him that dwelt in the bush. Let these come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the crown of the head of him that is prince among his brothers. NIV 16 with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush. Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers. RSV 17 His firstling bull has majesty, and his horns are the horns of a wild ox; with them he shall push the peoples, all of them, to the ends of the earth; such are the ten thousands of E'phraim, and such are the thousands of Manas'seh." NIV 17 In majesty he is like a firstborn bull; his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even those at the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh." RSV 18 And of Zeb'ulun he said, "Rejoice, Zeb'ulun, in your going out; and Is'sachar, in your tents. NIV 18 About Zebulun he said: "Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out, and you, Issachar, in your tents. RSV 19 They shall call peoples to their mountain; there they offer right sacrifices; for they suck the affluence of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand." NIV 19 They will summon peoples to the mountain and there offer sacrifices of righteousness; they will feast on the abundance of the seas, on the treasures hidden in the sand." RSV 20 And of Gad he said, "Blessed be he who enlarges Gad! Gad couches like a lion, he tears the arm, and the crown of the head. NIV 20 About Gad he said: "Blessed is he who enlarges Gad's domain! Gad lives there like a lion, tearing at arm or head. RSV 21 He chose the best of the land for himself, for there a commander's portion was reserved; and he came to the heads of the people, with Israel he executed the commands and just decrees of the LORD." NIV 21 He chose the best land for himself; the leader's portion was kept for him. When the heads of the people assembled, he carried out the LORD's righteous will, and his judgments concerning Israel." RSV 22 And of Dan he said, "Dan is a lion's whelp, that leaps forth from Bashan." NIV 22 About Dan he said: "Dan is a lion's cub, springing out of Bashan." RSV 23 And of Naph'tali he said, "O Naph'tali, satisfied with favor, and full of the blessing of the LORD, possess the lake and the south." NIV 23 About Naphtali he said: "Naphtali is abounding with the favor of the LORD and is full of his blessing; he will inherit southward to the lake." RSV 24 And of Asher he said, "Blessed above sons be Asher; let him be the favorite of his brothers, and let him dip his foot in oil. NIV 24 About Asher he said: "Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be favored by his brothers, and let him bathe his feet in oil. RSV 25 Your bars shall be iron and bronze; and as your days, so shall your strength be. NIV 25 The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze, and your strength will equal your days. RSV 26 "There is none like God, O Jesh'urun, who rides through the heavens to your help, and in his majesty through the skies. NIV 26 "There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. RSV 27 The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy before you, and said, Destroy. NIV 27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, 'Destroy him!' RSV 28 So Israel dwelt in safety, the fountain of Jacob alone, in a land of grain and wine; yea, his heavens drop down dew. NIV 28 So Israel will live in safety alone; Jacob's spring is secure in a land of grain and new wine, where the heavens drop dew. RSV 29 Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help, and the sword of your triumph! Your enemies shall come fawning to you; and you shall tread upon their high places." NIV 29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will trample down their high places."
