Deuteronomy 5

NRS 1 Moses convened all Israel, and said to them: Hear, O Israel, the statutes and ordinances that I am addressing to you today; you shall learn them and observe them diligently. NIV 1 Moses summoned all Israel and said: Hear, O Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. NRS 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. NIV 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. NRS 3 Not with our ancestors did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. NIV 3 It was not with our fathers that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today. NRS 4 The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the fire. NIV 4 The LORD spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. NRS 5 (At that time I was standing between the Lord and you to declare to you the words of the Lord; for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said: NIV 5 (At that time I stood between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said: NRS 6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; NIV 6 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. NRS 7 you shall have no other gods before me. NIV 7 "You shall have no other gods before me. NRS 8 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. NIV 8 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. NRS 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me, NIV 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, NRS 10 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. NIV 10 but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. NRS 11 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. NIV 11 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. NRS 12 Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. NIV 12 "Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. NRS 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. NIV 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, NRS 14 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. NIV 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. NRS 15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day. NIV 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. NRS 16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. NIV 16 "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. NRS 17 You shall not murder. NIV 17 "You shall not murder. NRS 18 Neither shall you commit adultery. NIV 18 "You shall not commit adultery. NRS 19 Neither shall you steal. NIV 19 "You shall not steal. NRS 20 Neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbor. NIV 20 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. NRS 21 Neither shall you covet your neighbor's wife. Neither shall you desire your neighbor's house, or field, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. NIV 21 "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor's house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." NRS 22 These words the Lord spoke with a loud voice to your whole assembly at the mountain, out of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, and he added no more. He wrote them on two stone tablets, and gave them to me. NIV 22 These are the commandments the LORD proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me. NRS 23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you approached me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders; NIV 23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leading men of your tribes and your elders came to me. NRS 24 and you said, "Look, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the fire. Today we have seen that God may speak to someone and the person may still live. NIV 24 And you said, "The LORD our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with him. NRS 25 So now why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we shall die. NIV 25 But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer. NRS 26 For who is there of all flesh that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and remained alive? NIV 26 For what mortal man has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived? NRS 27 Go near, you yourself, and hear all that the Lord our God will say. Then tell us everything that the Lord our God tells you, and we will listen and do it." NIV 27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then tell us whatever the LORD our God tells you. We will listen and obey." NRS 28 The Lord heard your words when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me: "I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you; they are right in all that they have spoken. NIV 28 The LORD heard you when you spoke to me and the LORD said to me, "I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good. NRS 29 If only they had such a mind as this, to fear me and to keep all my commandments always, so that it might go well with them and with their children forever! NIV 29 Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever! NRS 30 Go say to them, "Return to your tents.' NIV 30 "Go, tell them to return to their tents. NRS 31 But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you all the commandments, the statutes and the ordinances, that you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess." NIV 31 But you stay here with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess." NRS 32 You must therefore be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you shall not turn to the right or to the left. NIV 32 So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. NRS 33 You must follow exactly the path that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you are to possess. NIV 33 Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.
