Deuteronomy 5

WEB 1 Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and observe to do them. NIV 1 Moses summoned all Israel and said: Hear, O Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. WEB 2 Yahweh our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. NIV 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. WEB 3 Yahweh didn't make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day. NIV 3 It was not with our fathers that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today. WEB 4 Yahweh spoke with you face to face on the mountain out of the midst of the fire, NIV 4 The LORD spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. WEB 5 (I stood between Yahweh and you at that time, to show you the word of Yahweh: for you were afraid because of the fire, and didn't go up onto the mountain;) saying, NIV 5 (At that time I stood between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said: WEB 6 "I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. NIV 6 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. WEB 7 You shall have no other gods before me. NIV 7 "You shall have no other gods before me. WEB 8 "You shall not make an engraved image for yourself, [nor] any likeness [of anything] that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: NIV 8 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. WEB 9 you shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them; for I, Yahweh, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me; NIV 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, WEB 10 and showing lovingkindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. NIV 10 but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. WEB 11 "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain: for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. NIV 11 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. WEB 12 "Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you. NIV 12 "Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. WEB 13 Six days shall you labor, and do all your work; NIV 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, WEB 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God: [in it] you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; that your man-servant and your maid-servant may rest as well as you. NIV 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. WEB 15 You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm: therefore Yahweh your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. NIV 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. WEB 16 "Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. NIV 16 "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. WEB 17 "You shall not murder. NIV 17 "You shall not murder. WEB 18 "Neither shall you commit adultery. NIV 18 "You shall not commit adultery. WEB 19 "Neither shall you steal. NIV 19 "You shall not steal. WEB 20 "Neither shall you give false testimony against your neighbor. NIV 20 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. WEB 21 "Neither shall you covet your neighbor's wife; neither shall you desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's." NIV 21 "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor's house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." WEB 22 These words Yahweh spoke to all your assembly on the mountain out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. He wrote them on two tables of stone, and gave them to me. NIV 22 These are the commandments the LORD proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me. WEB 23 It happened, when you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders; NIV 23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leading men of your tribes and your elders came to me. WEB 24 and you said, Behold, Yahweh our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God does speak with man, and he lives. NIV 24 And you said, "The LORD our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with him. WEB 25 Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of Yahweh our God any more, then we shall die. NIV 25 But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer. WEB 26 For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? NIV 26 For what mortal man has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived? WEB 27 Go you near, and hear all that Yahweh our God shall say: and speak you to us all that Yahweh our God shall speak to you; and we will hear it, and do it. NIV 27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then tell us whatever the LORD our God tells you. We will listen and obey." WEB 28 Yahweh heard the voice of your words, when you spoke to me; and Yahweh said to me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken to you: they have well said all that they have spoken. NIV 28 The LORD heard you when you spoke to me and the LORD said to me, "I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good. WEB 29 Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children forever! NIV 29 Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever! WEB 30 Go tell them, Return you to your tents. NIV 30 "Go, tell them to return to their tents. WEB 31 But as for you, stand you here by me, and I will speak to you all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it. NIV 31 But you stay here with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess." WEB 32 You shall observe to do therefore as Yahweh your God has commanded you: you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. NIV 32 So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. WEB 33 You shall walk in all the way which Yahweh your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess. NIV 33 Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.
