Deuteronomy 6

CJB 1 "Now this is the mitzvah, the laws and rulings which ADONAI your God ordered me to teach you for you to obey in the land you are crossing over to possess, NIV 1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, CJB 2 so that you will fear ADONAI your God and observe all his regulations and mitzvot that I am giving you - you, your child and your grandchild - as long as you live, and so that you will have long life. NIV 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. CJB 3 Therefore listen, Isra'el, and take care to obey, so that things will go well with you, and so that you will increase greatly, as ADONAI, the God of your ancestors, promised you by giving you a land flowing with milk and honey. NIV 3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. CJB 4 "Sh'ma, Yisra'el! ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI echad [Hear, Isra'el! ADONAI our God, ADONAI is one]; NIV 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. CJB 5 and you are to love ADONAI your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. NIV 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. CJB 6 These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart; NIV 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. CJB 7 and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. NIV 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. CJB 8 Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband around your forehead, NIV 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. CJB 9 and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates. NIV 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. CJB 10 "When ADONAI your God has brought you into the land he swore to your ancestors Avraham, Yitz'chak and Ya'akov that he would give you - cities great and prosperous, which you didn't build; NIV 10 When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you--a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, CJB 11 houses full of all sorts of good things, which you didn't fill; water cisterns dug out, which you didn't dig; vineyards and olive trees, which you didn't plant - and you have eaten your fill; NIV 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--then when you eat and are satisfied, CJB 12 then be careful not to forget ADONAI, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you lived as slaves. NIV 12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. CJB 13 You are to fear ADONAI your God, serve him and swear by his name. NIV 13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name. CJB 14 You are not to follow other gods, chosen from the gods of the peoples around you; NIV 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; CJB 15 because ADONAI, your God, who is here with you, is a jealous God. If you do, the anger of ADONAI your God will flare up against you and he will destroy you from the face of the earth. NIV 15 for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. CJB 16 Do not put ADONAI your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah [testing]. NIV 16 Do not test the LORD your God as you did at Massah. CJB 17 Observe diligently the mitzvot of ADONAI your God, and his instructions and laws which he has given you. NIV 17 Be sure to keep the commands of the LORD your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you. CJB 18 You are to do what is right and good in the sight of ADONAI, so that things will go well with you, and you will enter and possess the good land ADONAI swore to your ancestors, NIV 18 Do what is right and good in the LORD's sight, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and take over the good land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers, CJB 19 expelling all your enemies ahead of you, as ADONAI said. NIV 19 thrusting out all your enemies before you, as the LORD said. CJB 20 "Some day your child will ask you, 'What is the meaning of the instructions, laws and rulings which ADONAI our God has laid down for you?' NIV 20 In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the LORD our God has commanded you?" CJB 21 Then you will tell your child, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and ADONAI brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand. NIV 21 tell him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. CJB 22 ADONAI worked great and terrible signs and wonders against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household, before our very eyes. NIV 22 Before our eyes the LORD sent miraculous signs and wonders--great and terrible--upon Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. CJB 23 He brought us out from there in order to bring us to the land he had sworn to our ancestors that he would give us. NIV 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers. CJB 24 ADONAI ordered us to observe all these laws, to fear ADONAI our God, always for our own good, so that he might keep us alive, as we are today. NIV 24 The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. CJB 25 It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to obey all these mitzvot before ADONAI our God, just as he ordered us to do.'" NIV 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness."
