Deuteronomy 6

NIRV 1 The LORD your God has directed me to teach you his commands, rules and laws. Obey them in the land you will take over when you go across the Jordan River. NIV 1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, NIRV 2 Then you, your children and their children after them will have respect for the LORD your God as long as you live. Keep all of his rules and commands I'm giving you. If you do, you will enjoy long life. NIV 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. NIRV 3 Israel, listen to me. Make sure you obey me. Then things will go well with you. Your numbers will increase greatly in a land that has plenty of milk and honey. That's what the Lord, the God of your parents, promised you. NIV 3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. NIRV 4 Israel, listen to me. The LORD is our God. The LORD is the one and only God. NIV 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. NIRV 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your strength. NIV 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. NIRV 6 The commandments I give you today must be in your hearts. NIV 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. NIRV 7 Make sure your children learn them. Talk about them when you are at home. Talk about them when you walk along the road. Speak about them when you go to bed. And speak about them when you get up. NIV 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. NIRV 8 Write them down and tie them on your hands as a reminder. Also tie them on your foreheads. NIV 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. NIRV 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses. Also write them on your gates. NIV 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. NIRV 10 The LORD your God will bring you into the land of Canaan. He took an oath. He promised he would give the land to your fathers. He promised it to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The land has large, wealthy cities you didn't build. NIV 10 When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you--a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, NIRV 11 It has houses that are filled with all kinds of good things you didn't provide. It has wells you didn't dig. And it has vineyards and groves of olive trees you didn't plant. You will have plenty to eat. NIV 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--then when you eat and are satisfied, NIRV 12 But be careful that you don't forget the Lord. Remember that he brought you out of Egypt. That's the land where you were slaves. NIV 12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. NIRV 13 Worship the LORD your God. He is the only one you should serve. When you make promises, take your oaths in his name. NIV 13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name. NIRV 14 Don't follow other gods. Don't worship the gods of the nations that are around you. NIV 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; NIRV 15 The LORD your God is among you. He is a jealous God. If you worship other gods, his anger will burn against you. And he will destroy you from the face of the land. NIV 15 for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. NIRV 16 Don't put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah. NIV 16 Do not test the LORD your God as you did at Massah. NIRV 17 Be sure to obey the LORD's commands. Follow the terms and rules he has given you. NIV 17 Be sure to keep the commands of the LORD your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you. NIRV 18 Do what is right and good in the LORD's eyes. Then things will go well with you. You will go in and take over the land. It's the good land the LORD promised with an oath to your people long ago. NIV 18 Do what is right and good in the LORD's sight, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and take over the good land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers, NIRV 19 You will drive out all of your enemies to make room for you. That's what the LORD said would happen. NIV 19 thrusting out all your enemies before you, as the LORD said. NIRV 20 Later on, your son might ask you, "What is the meaning of the terms, rules and laws the LORD our God has commanded you to obey?" NIV 20 In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the LORD our God has commanded you?" NIRV 21 If he does, tell him, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. But the LORD used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt. NIV 21 tell him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. NIRV 22 With our own eyes we saw the LORD send miraculous signs and wonders. They were great and terrible. He sent them on Egypt and Pharaoh and everyone in his house. NIV 22 Before our eyes the LORD sent miraculous signs and wonders--great and terrible--upon Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. NIRV 23 "But the LORD brought us out of Egypt. He planned to bring us into the land of Canaan and give it to us. It's the land he promised with an oath to our people long ago. NIV 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers. NIRV 24 "The LORD our God commanded us to obey all of his rules. He commanded us to have respect for him. If we do, we will always succeed and be kept alive. That's what is happening today. NIV 24 The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. NIRV 25 We must make sure we obey the whole law in the sight of the LORD our God. That's what he has commanded us to do. If we obey his law, we'll be doing what he requires of us." NIV 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness."
