Ephesians 5

NRS 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children NRS 2 and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. NRS 3 But fornication and impurity of any kind, or greed, must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints. NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. NRS 4 Entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be thanksgiving. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. NRS 5 Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure person, or one who is greedy (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. NRS 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes on those who are disobedient. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. NRS 7 Therefore do not be associated with them. NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. NRS 8 For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light NRS 9 for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) NRS 10 Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. NRS 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. NRS 12 For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. NRS 13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, NRS 14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, "Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." NRS 15 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, NRS 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. NRS 17 So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. NRS 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. NRS 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, NRS 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. NRS 21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. NRS 22 Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. NRS 23 For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior. NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. NRS 24 Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. NRS 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her NRS 26 in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, NRS 27 so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind—yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. NRS 28 In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. NRS 29 For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- NRS 30 because we are members of his body. NIV 30 for we are members of his body. NRS 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." NRS 32 This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church. NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. NRS 33 Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
