Ephesians 5

WYC 1 Therefore be ye followers of God, as most dear-worthy sons; NIV 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children WYC 2 and walk ye in love, as [and] Christ loved us, and gave himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God, into the odour of sweetness. NIV 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. WYC 3 And fornication, and all uncleanness, or avarice, be not named among you, as it becometh holy men; NIV 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. WYC 4 either filth, or folly speech, or buffoonery [or harlotry], that pertaineth not to profit, but more rather doing of thankings [but more doing of thankings]. NIV 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. WYC 5 For know ye this, and understand, that each lecher, or unclean man, or covetous [man], that serveth to maumets [+Forsooth this thing know ye, understanding that each fornicator, or unclean man, or avarice man, that is serving of idols, or maumets], hath not heritage in the kingdom of Christ and of God. NIV 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. WYC 6 No man deceive you by vain words; for why for these things the wrath of God came upon the sons of unbelief. NIV 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. WYC 7 Therefore do not ye be made partners of them. NIV 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. WYC 8 For ye were sometime darknesses, but now ye be light in the Lord. Walk ye as the sons of light [Walk as the sons of light]. NIV 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light WYC 9 For the fruit of light is in all goodness, and rightwiseness, and truth. NIV 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) WYC 10 And prove ye what thing is well pleasing to God. [Proving what is well pleasing to God.] NIV 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. WYC 11 And do not ye commune to unfruitous works of darknesses; but more rather reprove ye [them]. NIV 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. WYC 12 For what things be done of them in privy, it is foul, yea, to speak. NIV 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. WYC 13 And all things that be reproved of the light, be openly showed; for all thing that is showed, is light. [Forsooth all things that be reproved of the light, be made open; forsooth all thing that is made open, is light.] NIV 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, WYC 14 For which thing he saith, Rise thou that sleepest, and rise up from death, and Christ shall lighten thee. [+For which thing he saith, Rise thou that sleepest, and rise up from dead, and Christ shall illumine, or lighten, thee.] NIV 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." WYC 15 Therefore, brethren, see ye, how warily ye shall go; not as unwise men, but as wise men, NIV 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, WYC 16 again-buying the time, for the days be evil. NIV 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. WYC 17 Therefore do not ye be made unwise, but understanding which is the will of God [which is the will of the Lord]. NIV 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. WYC 18 And do not ye be drunk of wine, in which is lechery [in which is luxury], but be ye filled with the Holy Ghost; NIV 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. WYC 19 and speak ye to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and saying psalm in your hearts to the Lord; [speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and saying psalm in your heart to the Lord;] NIV 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, WYC 20 evermore doing thankings for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God and to the Father [to God and the Father.] NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. WYC 21 Be ye subject together in the dread of Christ. NIV 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. WYC 22 Women, be they subject to their husbands, as to the Lord, NIV 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. WYC 23 for the man is head of the woman, as Christ is head of the church; he is Saviour of his body. NIV 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. WYC 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so [and] women to their husbands in all things. NIV 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. WYC 25 Men, love ye your wives, as [and] Christ loved the church, and gave himself for it, NIV 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her WYC 26 to make it holy; and cleansed it with the washing of water [that he should make it holy; cleansing it with the washing of water], in the word of life, NIV 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, WYC 27 to give the church glorious to himself, that it had no wem, nor rivelling, or any such thing [+that he should give the church glorious to himself, not having wem, or spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing], but that it be holy and undefouled. NIV 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. WYC 28 So and men shall love their wives, as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife, loveth himself; NIV 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. WYC 29 for no man hated ever his own flesh, but nourisheth and fostereth it, as [and] Christ doeth the church. NIV 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- WYC 30 And we be members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. [For we be members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.] NIV 30 for we are members of his body. WYC 31 For this thing a man shall forsake his father and mother, and he shall draw to his wife; and they shall be twain in one flesh [and he shall cleave to his wife; and they shall be two in one flesh]. NIV 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." WYC 32 This sacrament is great; yea, I say in Christ, and in the church. NIV 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. WYC 33 Nevertheless ye all, each man love his wife as himself; and the wife dread her husband. NIV 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
