MSG 2 They followed the route from Rephidim, arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai, and set up camp. Israel camped there facing the mountain. NIV 2 After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. MSG 3 As Moses went up to meet God, God called down to him from the mountain: "Speak to the House of Jacob, tell the People of Israel: NIV 3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: MSG 4 'You have seen what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to me. NIV 4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. MSG 5 If you will listen obediently to what I say and keep my covenant, out of all peoples you'll be my special treasure. The whole Earth is mine to choose from, NIV 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, MSG 6 but you're special: a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.' "This is what I want you to tell the People of Israel." NIV 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." MSG 7 Moses came back and called the elders of Israel together and set before them all these words which God had commanded him. NIV 7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. NIV 8 The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. MSG 9 God said to Moses, "Get ready. I'm about to come to you in a thick cloud so that the people can listen in and trust you completely when I speak with you." Again Moses reported the people's answer to God. NIV 9 The LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said. MSG 10 God said to Moses, "Go to the people. For the next two days get these people ready to meet the Holy God. Have them scrub their clothes NIV 10 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes MSG 11 so that on the third day they'll be fully prepared, because on the third day God will come down on Mount Sinai and make his presence known to all the people. NIV 11 and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. MSG 12 Post boundaries for the people all around, telling them, 'Warning! Don't climb the mountain. Don't even touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain dies - a certain death. NIV 12 Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. MSG 13 And no one is to touch that person, he's to be stoned. That's right - stoned. Or shot with arrows, shot to death. Animal or man, whichever - put to death.' "A long blast from the horn will signal that it's safe to climb the mountain." NIV 13 He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him. Whether man or animal, he shall not be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they go up to the mountain." MSG 14 Moses went down the mountain to the people and prepared them for the holy meeting. They gave their clothes a good scrubbing. NIV 14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. MSG 15 Then he addressed the people: "Be ready in three days. Don't sleep with a woman." NIV 15 Then he said to the people, "Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations." NIV 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. MSG 18 Mount Sinai was all smoke because God had come down on it as fire. MSG 22 And the priests also, warn them to prepare themselves for the holy meeting, lest God break out against them." NIV 22 Even the priests, who approach the LORD, must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them." MSG 23 Moses said to God, "But the people can't climb Mount Sinai. You've already warned us well telling us: 'Post boundaries around the mountain. Respect the holy mountain.'" NIV 23 Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.' " MSG 24 God told him, "Go down and then bring Aaron back up with you. But make sure that the priests and the people don't break through and come up to God, lest he break out against them."
