Exodus 19

NIRV 1 Exactly three months after the people of Israel left Egypt, they came to the Desert of Sinai. NIV 1 In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt--on the very day--they came to the Desert of Sinai. NIRV 2 After they started out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai. They camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. NIV 2 After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. NIRV 3 Then Moses went up to God. The LORD called out to him from the mountain. He said, "Here is what I want you to say to my people, who came from Jacob's family. Tell the Israelites, NIV 3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: NIRV 4 'You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt. You saw how I carried you on the wings of eagles and brought you to myself. NIV 4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. NIRV 5 " 'Now obey me completely. Keep my covenant. If you do, then out of all of the nations you will be my special treasure. The whole earth is mine. NIV 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, NIRV 6 But you will be a kingdom of priests to serve me. You will be my holy nation.' That is what you must tell the Israelites." NIV 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." NIRV 7 So Moses went back. He sent for the elders of the people. He explained to them everything the LORD had commanded him to say. NIV 7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. NIRV 8 All of the people answered together. They said, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord. NIV 8 The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. NIRV 9 The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, "I am going to come to you in a thick cloud. The people will hear me speaking with you. They will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said. NIV 9 The LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said. NIRV 10 The LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people. Today and tomorrow set them apart for me. Have them wash their clothes. NIV 10 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes NIRV 11 Have the people ready by the third day. On that day I will come down on Mount Sinai. Everyone will see it. NIV 11 and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. NIRV 12 "Put limits for the people around the mountain. Tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain. Do not even touch the foot of it. You can be sure that all who touch the mountain will be put to death. NIV 12 Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. NIRV 13 Do not lay a hand on any of them. Kill them with stones or shoot them with arrows. Whether they are people or animals, do not let them live.' They may go up to the mountain only when the ram's horn gives out a long blast." NIV 13 He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him. Whether man or animal, he shall not be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they go up to the mountain." NIRV 14 Moses went down the mountain to the people. After he set them apart for the Lord, they washed their clothes. NIV 14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. NIRV 15 Then he spoke to the people. He said, "Get ready for the third day. Don't make love." NIV 15 Then he said to the people, "Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations." NIRV 16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud covered the mountain. A trumpet gave out a very loud blast. Everyone in the camp trembled with fear. NIRV 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God. They stood at the foot of the mountain. And the voice of God answered him. NIV 19 and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. NIRV 20 The LORD came down to the top of Mount Sinai. He told Moses to come to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up. NIV 20 The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up NIRV 21 The LORD said to him, "Go down and warn the people. They must not force their way through to see me. If they do, many of them will die. NIV 21 and the LORD said to him, "Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the LORD and many of them perish. NIRV 22 The priests approach me when they serve me. But even they must set themselves apart for me. If they do not, my anger will break out against them." NIV 22 Even the priests, who approach the LORD, must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them." NIRV 23 Moses said to the Lord, "The people can't come up Mount Sinai. You yourself warned us. You said, 'Put limits around the mountain. Set it apart as holy.' " NIV 23 Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.' " NIRV 24 The LORD replied, "Go down. Bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through. They must not come up to me. If they do, my anger will break out against them." NIV 24 The LORD replied, "Go down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the LORD, or he will break out against them." NIRV 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.
