Exodus 19

RHE 1 In the third month of the departure of Israel out of the land of Egypt, on this day they came into the wilderness of Sinai: NIV 1 In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt--on the very day--they came to the Desert of Sinai. RHE 2 For departing out of Raphidim, and coming to the desert of Sinai, they camped in the same place, and there Israel pitched their tents over against the mountain. NIV 2 After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. RHE 3 And Moses went up to God; and the Lord called unto him from the mountain, and said: Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: NIV 3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: RHE 4 You have seen what I have done to the Egyptians, how I have carried you upon the wings of eagles, and have taken you to myself. NIV 4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. RHE 5 If therefore you will hear my voice, and keep my covenant, you shall be my peculiar possession above all people: for all the earth is mine. NIV 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, RHE 6 And you shall be to me a priestly kingdom, and a holy nation. These are the words thou shalt speak to the children of Israel. NIV 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." RHE 7 Moses came; and calling together the elders of the people, he declared all the words which the Lord had commanded. NIV 7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. RHE 8 And all the people answered together: All that the Lord hath spoken, we will do. And when Moses had related the people’s words to the Lord, NIV 8 The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. RHE 9 The Lord said to him: Lo, now will I come to thee in the darkness of a cloud, that the people may hear me speaking to thee, and may believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people to the Lord. NIV 9 The LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said. RHE 10 And he said to him: Go to the people, and sanctify them to day, and to morrow, and let them wash their garments. NIV 10 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes RHE 11 And let them be ready against the third day; for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people, upon Mount Sinai. NIV 11 and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. RHE 12 And thou shalt appoint certain limits to the people round about, and thou shalt say to them: Take heed ye go not up into the mount, and that ye touch not the borders thereof: every one that toucheth the mount, dying he shall die. NIV 12 Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. RHE 13 No hands shall touch him, but he shall be stoned to death, or he shall be shot through with arrows: whether it be beast, or man, he shall not live. When the trumpet shall begin to sound, then let them go up into the mount. NIV 13 He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him. Whether man or animal, he shall not be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they go up to the mountain." RHE 14 And Moses came down from the mount to the people, and sanctified them. And when they had washed their garments, NIV 14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. RHE 15 He said to them: Be ready against the third day, and come not near your wives. NIV 15 Then he said to the people, "Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations." RHE 16 And now the third day was come, and the morning appeared: and behold thunders began to be heard, and lightning to flash, and a very thick cloud to cover the mount, and the noise of the trumpet sounded exceeding loud; and the people that was in the camp, feared. NIV 16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. RHE 17 And when Moses had brought them forth to meet God, from the place of the camp, they stood at the bottom of the mount. NIV 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. RHE 18 And all Mount Sinai was on a smoke: because the Lord was come down upon it in fire, and the smoke arose from it as out of a furnace: and all the mount was terrible. NIV 18 Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, RHE 19 And the sound of the trumpet grew by degrees louder and louder, and was drawn out to a greater length: Moses spoke, and God answered him. NIV 19 and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. RHE 20 And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, in the very top of the mount, and he called Moses unto the top thereof. And when he was gone up thither, NIV 20 The LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up RHE 21 He said unto him: Go down, and charge the people; lest they should have a mind to pass the limits to see the Lord, and a very great multitude of them should perish. NIV 21 and the LORD said to him, "Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the LORD and many of them perish. RHE 22 The priests also that come to the Lord, let them be sanctified, lest he strike them. NIV 22 Even the priests, who approach the LORD, must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them." RHE 23 And Moses said to the Lord: The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai: for thou didst charge, and command, saying: Set limits about the mount, and sanctify it. NIV 23 Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.' " RHE 24 And the Lord said to him: Go, get thee down; and thou shalt come up, thou and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people pass the limits, nor come up to the Lord, lest he kill them. NIV 24 The LORD replied, "Go down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the LORD, or he will break out against them." RHE 25 And Moses went down to the people and told them all. NIV 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.
