Exodus 20

HNV 1 God spoke all these words, saying, NIV 1 And God spoke all these words: HNV 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Mitzrayim, out of the house of bondage. NIV 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. HNV 3 You shall have no other gods before me. NIV 3 "You shall have no other gods before me. HNV 4 "You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the eretz beneath, or that is in the water under the eretz: NIV 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. HNV 5 you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, NIV 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, HNV 6 and showing lovingkindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my mitzvot. NIV 6 but showing love to a thousand [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. HNV 7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. NIV 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. HNV 8 "Remember the day of Shabbat, to keep it holy. NIV 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. HNV 9 You shall labor six days, and do all your work, NIV 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, HNV 10 but the seventh day is a Shabbat to the LORD your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; NIV 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. HNV 11 for in six days the LORD made heaven and eretz, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the day of Shabbat, and made it holy. HNV 18 All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the shofar, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance. NIV 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance HNV 19 They said to Moshe, "Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don't let God speak with us, lest we die." NIV 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die." HNV 20 Moshe said to the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin." NIV 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning." HNV 21 The people stayed at a distance, and Moshe drew near to the thick darkness where God was. NIV 21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. HNV 22 The LORD said to Moshe, "This is what you shall tell the children of Yisra'el: 'You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. NIV 22 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: HNV 23 You shall most certainly not make alongside of me gods of silver, or gods of gold for yourselves. NIV 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold. HNV 24 You shall make an altar of eretz for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace-offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you. NIV 24 " 'Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. HNV 25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it. NIV 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. HNV 26 Neither shall you go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.' NIV 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.'
