Exodus 20

NRS 1 Then God spoke all these words: NIV 1 And God spoke all these words: NRS 2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; NIV 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. NRS 3 you shall have no other gods before me. NIV 3 "You shall have no other gods before me. NRS 4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. NIV 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. NRS 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, NIV 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, NRS 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. NRS 7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. NIV 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. NRS 8 Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. NIV 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. NRS 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. NIV 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, NRS 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. NRS 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. NRS 18 When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, they were afraid and trembled and stood at a distance, NIV 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance NRS 19 and said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die." NIV 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die." NRS 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid; for God has come only to test you and to put the fear of him upon you so that you do not sin." NIV 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning." NRS 21 Then the people stood at a distance, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. NIV 21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. NRS 22 The Lord said to Moses: Thus you shall say to the Israelites: "You have seen for yourselves that I spoke with you from heaven. NIV 22 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: NRS 23 You shall not make gods of silver alongside me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold. NIV 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold. NRS 24 You need make for me only an altar of earth and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your offerings of well-being, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you. NIV 24 " 'Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. NRS 25 But if you make for me an altar of stone, do not build it of hewn stones; for if you use a chisel upon it you profane it. NIV 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. NRS 26 You shall not go up by steps to my altar, so that your nakedness may not be exposed on it." NIV 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.'
