Exodus 20:18-21

NLT 18 When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear. NIV 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance NLT 19 And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!” NIV 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die." NLT 20 “Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!” NIV 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning." NLT 21 As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was. NIV 21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
