Exodus 22

HNV 1 "If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it, or sells it; he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. NIV 1 "If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep. HNV 2 If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him. NIV 2 "If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; HNV 3 If the sun has risen on him, there shall be guilt of bloodshed for him; he shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. NIV 3 but if it happens after sunrise, he is guilty of bloodshed. "A thief must certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he must be sold to pay for his theft. HNV 4 If the stolen property is found in his hand alive, whether it is ox, donkey, or sheep, he shall pay double. NIV 4 "If the stolen animal is found alive in his possession--whether ox or donkey or sheep--he must pay back double. HNV 5 "If a man causes a field or vineyard to be eaten, and lets his animal loose, and it grazes in another man's field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field, and from the best of his own vineyard. NIV 5 "If a man grazes his livestock in a field or vineyard and lets them stray and they graze in another man's field, he must make restitution from the best of his own field or vineyard. HNV 6 "If fire breaks out, and catches in thorns so that the shocks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field are consumed; he who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. NIV 6 "If a fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that it burns shocks of grain or standing grain or the whole field, the one who started the fire must make restitution. HNV 7 "If a man delivers to his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it is stolen out of the man's house; if the thief is found, he shall pay double. NIV 7 "If a man gives his neighbor silver or goods for safekeeping and they are stolen from the neighbor's house, the thief, if he is caught, must pay back double. HNV 8 If the thief isn't found, then the master of the house shall come near to God, to find out if he hasn't put his hand to his neighbor's goods. NIV 8 But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges to determine whether he has laid his hands on the other man's property. HNV 9 For every matter of trespass, whether it be for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for clothing, or for any kind of lost thing, whereof one says, 'This is mine,' the cause of both parties shall come before God. He whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor. NIV 9 In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, 'This is mine,' both parties are to bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges declare guilty must pay back double to his neighbor. HNV 10 "If a man delivers to his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies or is injured, or driven away, no man seeing it; NIV 10 "If a man gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to his neighbor for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away while no one is looking, HNV 11 the oath of the LORD shall be between them both, whether he hasn't put his hand to his neighbor's goods; and the owner of it shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution. NIV 11 the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath before the LORD that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other person's property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required. HNV 12 But if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to the owner of it. NIV 12 But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, he must make restitution to the owner. HNV 13 If it is torn in pieces, let him bring it for evidence. He shall not make good that which was torn. NIV 13 If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, he shall bring in the remains as evidence and he will not be required to pay for the torn animal. HNV 14 "If a man borrows anything of his neighbor's, and it is injured, or dies, the owner of it not being with it, he shall surely make restitution. NIV 14 "If a man borrows an animal from his neighbor and it is injured or dies while the owner is not present, he must make restitution. HNV 15 If the owner of it is with it, he shall not make it good. If it is a leased thing, it came for its lease. NIV 15 But if the owner is with the animal, the borrower will not have to pay. If the animal was hired, the money paid for the hire covers the loss. HNV 16 "If a man entices a virgin who isn't pledged to be married, and lies with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife. NIV 16 "If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife. HNV 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. NIV 17 If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins. HNV 18 "You shall not allow a sorceress to live. NIV 18 "Do not allow a sorceress to live. HNV 19 "Whoever has sex with an animal shall surely be put to death. NIV 19 "Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be put to death. HNV 20 "He who sacrifices to any god, except to the LORD only, shall be utterly destroyed. NIV 20 "Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed. HNV 21 "You shall not wrong an alien, neither shall you oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Mitzrayim. NIV 21 "Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt. HNV 22 "You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child. NIV 22 "Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan. HNV 23 If you take advantage of them at all, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry; NIV 23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. HNV 24 and my wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. NIV 24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless. HNV 25 "If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor; neither shall you charge him interest. NIV 25 "If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not be like a moneylender; charge him no interest. HNV 26 If you take your neighbor's garment as collateral, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down, NIV 26 If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, return it to him by sunset, HNV 27 for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in? It will happen, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious. NIV 27 because his cloak is the only covering he has for his body. What else will he sleep in? When he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate. HNV 28 "You shall not blaspheme God, nor curse a ruler of your people. NIV 28 "Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people. HNV 29 "You shall not delay to offer from your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. "You shall give the firstborn of your sons to me. NIV 29 "Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats. "You must give me the firstborn of your sons. HNV 30 You shall do likewise with your oxen and with your sheep. Seven days it shall be with its mother, then on the eighth day you shall give it me. NIV 30 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day. HNV 31 "You shall be holy men to me, therefore you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by animals in the field. You shall cast it to the dogs. NIV 31 "You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.
