Exodus 24

ESV 1 Then he said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. NIV 1 Then he said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance, ESV 2 Moses alone shall come near to the LORD, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him." NIV 2 but Moses alone is to approach the LORD; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him." ESV 3 Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, "All the words that the LORD has spoken we will do." NIV 3 When Moses went and told the people all the LORD's words and laws, they responded with one voice, "Everything the LORD has said we will do." ESV 4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. He rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 4 Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. ESV 5 And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the LORD. NIV 5 Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the LORD. ESV 6 And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. NIV 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he sprinkled on the altar. ESV 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient." NIV 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, "We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey." ESV 8 And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, "Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words." NIV 8 Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words." ESV 9 Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, NIV 9 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up ESV 10 and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. NIV 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of sapphire, clear as the sky itself. ESV 11 And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank. NIV 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank. ESV 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction." NIV 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commands I have written for their instruction." ESV 13 So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. NIV 13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God. ESV 14 And he said to the elders, "Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them." NIV 14 He said to the elders, "Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute can go to them." ESV 15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. NIV 15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, ESV 16 The glory of the LORD dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. NIV 16 and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud. ESV 17 Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. NIV 17 To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. ESV 18 Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. NIV 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
