Exodus 33

HNV 1 The LORD spoke to Moshe, "Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Mitzrayim, to the land of which I swore to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya`akov, saying, 'I will give it to your seed.' NIV 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants.' HNV 2 I will send an angel before you; and I will drive out the Kana`ani, the Amori, and the Hittite, and the Perizzi, the Hivvi, and the Yevusi: NIV 2 I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. HNV 3 to a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of you, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you in the way." NIV 3 Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way." HNV 4 When the people heard this evil news, they mourned: and no one put on his jewelry. NIV 4 When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no one put on any ornaments. HNV 5 The LORD said to Moshe, "Tell the children of Yisra'el, 'You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go up into your midst for one moment, I would consume you. Therefore now take off your jewelry from you, that I may know what to do to you." NIV 5 For the LORD had said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites, 'You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.' " HNV 6 The children of Yisra'el stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horev onward. NIV 6 So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb. HNV 7 Now Moshe used to take the tent and to pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it "The tent of meeting." It happened that everyone who sought the LORD went out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. NIV 7 Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the "tent of meeting." Anyone inquiring of the LORD would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. HNV 8 It happened that when Moshe went out to the Tent, that all the people rose up, and stood, everyone at their tent door, and watched Moshe, until he had gone into the Tent. NIV 8 And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. HNV 9 It happened, when Moshe entered into the Tent, that the pillar of cloud descended, stood at the door of the Tent, and spoke with Moshe. NIV 9 As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the LORD spoke with Moses. HNV 10 All the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the Tent, and all the people rose up and worshiped, everyone at their tent door. NIV 10 Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to his tent. HNV 11 The LORD spoke to Moshe face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Yehoshua, the son of Nun, a young man, didn't depart out of the Tent. NIV 11 The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent. HNV 12 Moshe said to the LORD, "Behold, you tell me, 'Bring up this people:' and you haven't let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.' NIV 12 Moses said to the LORD, "You have been telling me, 'Lead these people,' but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, 'I know you by name and you have found favor with me.' HNV 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight: and consider that this nation is your people." NIV 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people." HNV 14 He said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." NIV 14 The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." HNV 15 He said to him, "If your presence doesn't go with me, don't carry us up from here. NIV 15 Then Moses said to him, "If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. HNV 16 For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn't it in that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the eretz?" NIV 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?" HNV 17 The LORD said to Moshe, "I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name." NIV 17 And the LORD said to Moses, "I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name." HNV 18 He said, "Please show me your glory." NIV 18 Then Moses said, "Now show me your glory." HNV 19 He said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy." NIV 19 And the LORD said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. HNV 20 He said, "You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live." NIV 20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live." HNV 21 The LORD also said, "Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock. NIV 21 Then the LORD said, "There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. HNV 22 It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; NIV 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. HNV 23 then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen." NIV 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen."
