Exodus 5

LEB 1 And afterward, Moses and Aaron went, and they said to Pharaoh, "Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel, 'Release my people so that they may hold a festival for me in the desert.'" NIV 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.' " LEB 2 And Pharaoh said, "Who is Yahweh that I should listen to his voice to release Israel? I do not know Yahweh, and also I will not release Israel." NIV 2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go." LEB 3 And they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go [on] a three-day journey into the desert, and let us sacrifice to Yahweh our God, lest he strike us with plague or with sword." NIV 3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword." LEB 4 And the king of Egypt said, "Why, Moses and Aaron, do you take the people from their work? Go to your {forced labor}!" NIV 4 But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!" LEB 5 And Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land [are] now many, and you want to stop them from their {forced labor}." NIV 5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working." LEB 6 And on that day Pharaoh commanded the slave drivers over the people and his foremen, saying, NIV 6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: LEB 7 "You must no longer give straw to the people to make the bricks like {before}. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. NIV 7 "You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. LEB 8 But the quota of the bricks that they [were] making {before} {you must require of them}. You must not reduce from it, because they [are] lazy. Therefore they [are] crying out, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' NIV 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' LEB 9 Let the work be heavier on the men so that they will do it and not pay attention to words of deception." NIV 9 Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies." LEB 10 And the slave drivers of the people and their foremen went out, and they spoke to the people, saying, "Thus says Pharaoh, 'I [am] not giving you straw. NIV 10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw. LEB 11 You go, get straw for yourselves from whatever you find because not a thing is being reduced from your work.'" NIV 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.' " LEB 12 And the people spread out in all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for the straw. NIV 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. LEB 13 And the slave drivers [were] insisting, saying, "Finish your work {for each day} on its day, as {when there was straw}." NIV 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw." LEB 14 And the foremen of the {Israelites}, whom Pharaoh's slave drivers had appointed over them, were beaten [by men who were] saying, "Why have you not completed your portion of brickmaking {as before, both yesterday and today}?" NIV 14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?" LEB 15 And the foremen of the {Israelites} came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you treat your servants like this? NIV 15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way? LEB 16 Straw [is] not being given to your servants, but [they are] saying to us, 'Make bricks!' and, look, your servants [are] being beaten, but it is the fault of your people." NIV 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people." LEB 17 And he said, "You [are] lazy, lazy! Therefore you [are] saying, 'Let us go; let us sacrifice to Yahweh.' NIV 17 Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.' LEB 18 And now go, work, but straw will not be given to you, and you must give the full quota of bricks." NIV 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks." LEB 19 And the foremen of the {Israelites} saw they were in trouble {with the saying}, "You will not reduce from your bricks {for each day} on its day." NIV 19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day." LEB 20 And they met Moses and Aaron, [who were] waiting to meet them when they [were] going out from Pharaoh. NIV 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, LEB 21 And they said to them, "May Yahweh look upon you and judge because you have caused our fragrance to stink in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants [so as] to put a sword into their hand to kill us." NIV 21 and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us." LEB 22 And Moses returned to Yahweh and said, "Lord, why have you brought trouble to this people? Why ever did you send me? NIV 22 Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me? LEB 23 And from the time I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble to this people, and you have certainly not delivered your people." NIV 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."
