Exodus 5

NRS 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, "Let my people go, so that they may celebrate a festival to me in the wilderness.' " NIV 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.' " NRS 2 But Pharaoh said, "Who is the Lord, that I should heed him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go." NIV 2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go." NRS 3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has revealed himself to us; let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness to sacrifice to the Lord our God, or he will fall upon us with pestilence or sword." NIV 3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword." NRS 4 But the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their work? Get to your labors!" NIV 4 But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!" NRS 5 Pharaoh continued, "Now they are more numerous than the people of the land and yet you want them to stop working!" NIV 5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working." NRS 6 That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, as well as their supervisors, NIV 6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: NRS 7 "You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as before; let them go and gather straw for themselves. NIV 7 "You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. NRS 8 But you shall require of them the same quantity of bricks as they have made previously; do not diminish it, for they are lazy; that is why they cry, "Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.' NIV 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' NRS 9 Let heavier work be laid on them; then they will labor at it and pay no attention to deceptive words." NIV 9 Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies." NRS 10 So the taskmasters and the supervisors of the people went out and said to the people, "Thus says Pharaoh, "I will not give you straw. NIV 10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw. NRS 11 Go and get straw yourselves, wherever you can find it; but your work will not be lessened in the least.' " NIV 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.' " NRS 12 So the people scattered throughout the land of Egypt, to gather stubble for straw. NIV 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. NRS 13 The taskmasters were urgent, saying, "Complete your work, the same daily assignment as when you were given straw." NIV 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw." NRS 14 And the supervisors of the Israelites, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and were asked, "Why did you not finish the required quantity of bricks yesterday and today, as you did before?" NIV 14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?" NRS 15 Then the Israelite supervisors came to Pharaoh and cried, "Why do you treat your servants like this? NIV 15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way? NRS 16 No straw is given to your servants, yet they say to us, "Make bricks!' Look how your servants are beaten! You are unjust to your own people." NIV 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people." NRS 17 He said, "You are lazy, lazy; that is why you say, "Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.' NIV 17 Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.' NRS 18 Go now, and work; for no straw shall be given you, but you shall still deliver the same number of bricks." NIV 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks." NRS 19 The Israelite supervisors saw that they were in trouble when they were told, "You shall not lessen your daily number of bricks." NIV 19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day." NRS 20 As they left Pharaoh, they came upon Moses and Aaron who were waiting to meet them. NIV 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, NRS 21 They said to them, "The Lord look upon you and judge! You have brought us into bad odor with Pharaoh and his officials, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us." NIV 21 and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us." NRS 22 Then Moses turned again to the Lord and said, "O Lord, why have you mistreated this people? Why did you ever send me? NIV 22 Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me? NRS 23 Since I first came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has mistreated this people, and you have done nothing at all to deliver your people." NIV 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."
