Ezekiel 12:1-20

CEB 1 The LORD's word came to me: NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: CEB 2 Human one, you live in a household of rebels. They have eyes to see but they don't see, ears to hear but they don't hear, because they are a household of rebels. NIV 2 "Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people. CEB 3 But you, human one, prepare a backpack for going into exile. In the daytime while they watch, go into exile; while they watch, go out from your place to another. Even though they are a household of rebels, perhaps they will understand. NIV 3 "Therefore, son of man, pack your belongings for exile and in the daytime, as they watch, set out and go from where you are to another place. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house. CEB 4 In the daytime while they watch, carry your backpack as if for exile. At twilight while they watch, go out like those who are led out to exile. NIV 4 During the daytime, while they watch, bring out your belongings packed for exile. Then in the evening, while they are watching, go out like those who go into exile. CEB 5 While they watch, dig a hole through the wall and take your backpack out through it. NIV 5 While they watch, dig through the wall and take your belongings out through it. CEB 6 While they watch, shoulder your backpack and carry it out in the dark. Cover your face so that you can't see the land, because I'm making you a sign for the house of Israel. NIV 6 Put them on your shoulder as they are watching and carry them out at dusk. Cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have made you a sign to the house of Israel." CEB 7 So I did as I was commanded. I carried out my backpack like an exile's backpack in the daytime. At night I dug a hole through the wall with my hands. In the darkness, I shouldered my backpack and carried it out while they watched. NIV 7 So I did as I was commanded. During the day I brought out my things packed for exile. Then in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands. I took my belongings out at dusk, carrying them on my shoulders while they watched. CEB 8 In the morning, the LORD's word came to me: NIV 8 In the morning the word of the LORD came to me: CEB 9 Human one, has the house of Israel, that household of rebels, asked you, "What are you doing?" NIV 9 "Son of man, did not that rebellious house of Israel ask you, 'What are you doing?' CEB 10 Say to them, The LORD God proclaims: This concerns the prince in Jerusalem, along with the entire house of Israel in it. NIV 10 "Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: This oracle concerns the prince in Jerusalem and the whole house of Israel who are there.' CEB 11 Say: I'm your sign. Just as I have done, so it will be done to them. They will go into captivity in exile. NIV 11 Say to them, 'I am a sign to you.' "As I have done, so it will be done to them. They will go into exile as captives. CEB 12 Their prince will shoulder his backpack at night and go out. They will dig through the wall to lead him out through it, and he will cover his face so that his eyes won't see the land. NIV 12 "The prince among them will put his things on his shoulder at dusk and leave, and a hole will be dug in the wall for him to go through. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land. CEB 13 But I will spread my net over him, catch him in my trap, and bring him to Babylon, to the land of the Chaldeans. He won't see it, but he will die there. NIV 13 I will spread my net for him, and he will be caught in my snare; I will bring him to Babylonia, the land of the Chaldeans, but he will not see it, and there he will die. CEB 14 As for all those who are in league with him, I will scatter his helpers and all his troops to the winds and let the sword loose after them. NIV 14 I will scatter to the winds all those around him--his staff and all his troops--and I will pursue them with drawn sword. CEB 15 They will know that I am the LORD when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands. NIV 15 "They will know that I am the LORD, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries. CEB 16 But I will preserve a few of their number from the sword, famine, and plague, so that they may confess all their detestable practices among the nations where they go. Then they will know that I am the LORD. NIV 16 But I will spare a few of them from the sword, famine and plague, so that in the nations where they go they may acknowledge all their detestable practices. Then they will know that I am the LORD." CEB 17 The LORD's word came to me: NIV 17 The word of the LORD came to me: CEB 18 Human one, eat your bread in trembling, and drink your water in anxious agitation. NIV 18 "Son of man, tremble as you eat your food, and shudder in fear as you drink your water. CEB 19 Say to the land's people, The LORD God proclaims to those living in Jerusalem regarding Israel's fertile land: As they anxiously eat up their bread and drink up their water in dismay, the land will be emptied of everything in it because of the violence of all who live there. NIV 19 Say to the people of the land: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says about those living in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: They will eat their food in anxiety and drink their water in despair, for their land will be stripped of everything in it because of the violence of all who live there. CEB 20 The inhabited cities will be laid waste, the land left desolate, and you will know that I am the LORD. NIV 20 The inhabited towns will be laid waste and the land will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD.' "
