NRS 1 The word of the Lord came to me: NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: NRS 2 What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge"? NIV 2 "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'? NRS 3 As I live, says the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. NIV 3 "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. NRS 4 Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die. NIV 4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die. NRS 5 If a man is righteous and does what is lawful and right— NIV 5 "Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right. NRS 6 if he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period, NIV 6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife or lie with a woman during her period. NRS 7 does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, commits no robbery, gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, NIV 7 He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked. NRS 8 does not take advance or accrued interest, withholds his hand from iniquity, executes true justice between contending parties, NIV 8 He does not lend at usury or take excessive interest. He withholds his hand from doing wrong and judges fairly between man and man. NRS 9 follows my statutes, and is careful to observe my ordinances, acting faithfully—such a one is righteous; he shall surely live, says the Lord God. NIV 9 He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign LORD. NRS 10 If he has a son who is violent, a shedder of blood, NIV 10 "Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other things NRS 11 who does any of these things (though his father does none of them), who eats upon the mountains, defiles his neighbor's wife, NIV 11 (though the father has done none of them): "He eats at the mountain shrines. He defiles his neighbor's wife. NRS 12 oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore the pledge, lifts up his eyes to the idols, commits abomination, NIV 12 He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery. He does not return what he took in pledge. He looks to the idols. He does detestable things. NRS 13 takes advance or accrued interest; shall he then live? He shall not. He has done all these abominable things; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself. NIV 13 He lends at usury and takes excessive interest. Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he will surely be put to death and his blood will be on his own head. NRS 14 But if this man has a son who sees all the sins that his father has done, considers, and does not do likewise, NIV 14 "But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things: NRS 15 who does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife, NIV 15 "He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife. NRS 16 does not wrong anyone, exacts no pledge, commits no robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, NIV 16 He does not oppress anyone or require a pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked. NRS 17 withholds his hand from iniquity, takes no advance or accrued interest, observes my ordinances, and follows my statutes; he shall not die for his father's iniquity; he shall surely live. NIV 17 He withholds his hand from sin and takes no usury or excessive interest. He keeps my laws and follows my decrees. He will not die for his father's sin; he will surely live. NRS 18 As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, he dies for his iniquity. NIV 18 But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people. NRS 19 Yet you say, "Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?" When the son has done what is lawful and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. NIV 19 "Yet you ask, 'Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?' Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live. NRS 20 The person who sins shall die. A child shall not suffer for the iniquity of a parent, nor a parent suffer for the iniquity of a child; the righteousness of the righteous shall be his own, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be his own. NIV 20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him. NRS 21 But if the wicked turn away from all their sins that they have committed and keep all my statutes and do what is lawful and right, they shall surely live; they shall not die. NIV 21 "But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die. NRS 22 None of the transgressions that they have committed shall be remembered against them; for the righteousness that they have done they shall live. NIV 22 None of the offenses he has committed will be remembered against him. Because of the righteous things he has done, he will live. NRS 23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that they should turn from their ways and live? NIV 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? NRS 24 But when the righteous turn away from their righteousness and commit iniquity and do the same abominable things that the wicked do, shall they live? None of the righteous deeds that they have done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which they are guilty and the sin they have committed, they shall die. NIV 24 "But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live? None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has committed, he will die. NRS 25 Yet you say, "The way of the Lord is unfair." Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? NIV 25 "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear, O house of Israel: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? NRS 26 When the righteous turn away from their righteousness and commit iniquity, they shall die for it; for the iniquity that they have committed they shall die. NIV 26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die. NRS 27 Again, when the wicked turn away from the wickedness they have committed and do what is lawful and right, they shall save their life. NIV 27 But if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life. NRS 28 Because they considered and turned away from all the transgressions that they had committed, they shall surely live; they shall not die. NIV 28 Because he considers all the offenses he has committed and turns away from them, he will surely live; he will not die. NRS 29 Yet the house of Israel says, "The way of the Lord is unfair." O house of Israel, are my ways unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? NIV 29 Yet the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Are my ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? NRS 30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, all of you according to your ways, says the Lord God. Repent and turn from all your transgressions; otherwise iniquity will be your ruin. NIV 30 "Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. NRS 31 Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? NIV 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? NRS 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord God. Turn, then, and live. NIV 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!
