Genesis 12

WEB 1 Now Yahweh said to Abram, "Get out of your country, and from your relatives, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you. NIV 1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. WEB 2 I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you, and make your name great. You will be a blessing. NIV 2 "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. WEB 3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you. In you will all of the families of the earth be blessed." NIV 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." WEB 4 So Abram went, as Yahweh had spoken to him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed out of Haran. NIV 4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. WEB 5 Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother's son, all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls who they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan. Into the land of Canaan they came. NIV 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. WEB 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. The Canaanite was then in the land. NIV 6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. WEB 7 Yahweh appeared to Abram, and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." He built an altar there to Yahweh, who appeared to him. NIV 7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. WEB 8 He left from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh, and called on the name of Yahweh. NIV 8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD. WEB 9 Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South. NIV 9 Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev. WEB 10 There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was sore in the land. NIV 10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. WEB 11 It happened, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, "See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look on. NIV 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "I know what a beautiful woman you are. WEB 12 It will happen, when the Egyptians will see you, that they will say, 'This is his wife.' They will kill me, but they will save you alive. NIV 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will let you live. WEB 13 Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you." NIV 13 Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you." WEB 14 It happened that when Abram had come into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. NIV 14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that she was a very beautiful woman. WEB 15 The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. NIV 15 And when Pharaoh's officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. WEB 16 He dealt well with Abram for her sake. He had sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and she-asses, and camels. NIV 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels. WEB 17 Yahweh plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. NIV 17 But the LORD inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife Sarai. WEB 18 Pharaoh called Abram, and said, "What is this that you have done to me? Why didn't you tell me that she was your wife? NIV 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. "What have you done to me?" he said. "Why didn't you tell me she was your wife? WEB 19 Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way." NIV 19 Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!" WEB 20 Pharaoh gave men charge concerning him: and they brought him on the way, and his wife, and all that he had. NIV 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.
