Genesis 13

RSV 1 So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb. NIV 1 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. RSV 2 Now Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. NIV 2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. RSV 3 And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, NIV 3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier RSV 4 to the place where he had made an altar at the first; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD. NIV 4 and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD. RSV 5 And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, NIV 5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. RSV 6 so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together, NIV 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. RSV 7 and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. At that time the Canaanites and the Per'izzites dwelt in the land. NIV 7 And quarreling arose between Abram's herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. RSV 8 Then Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are kinsmen. NIV 8 So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers. RSV 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left." NIV 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left." RSV 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw that the Jordan valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zo'ar; this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomor'rah. NIV 10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) RSV 11 So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan valley, and Lot journeyed east; thus they separated from each other. NIV 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: RSV 12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, while Lot dwelt among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. NIV 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. RSV 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD. NIV 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD. RSV 14 The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, "Lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; NIV 14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. RSV 15 for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants for ever. NIV 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. RSV 16 I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your descendants also can be counted. NIV 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. RSV 17 Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you." NIV 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you." RSV 18 So Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron; and there he built an altar to the LORD. NIV 18 So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.
