Genesis 14

RSV 1 In the days of Am'raphel king of Shinar, Ar'ioch king of Ella'sar, Ched-or-lao'mer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goi'im, NIV 1 At this time Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goiim RSV 2 these kings made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomor'rah, Shinab king of Admah, Sheme'ber king of Zeboi'im, and the king of Bela (that is, Zo'ar). NIV 2 went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). RSV 3 And all these joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea). NIV 3 All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (the Salt Sea). RSV 4 Twelve years they had served Ched-or-lao'mer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. NIV 4 For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. RSV 5 In the fourteenth year Ched-or-lao'mer and the kings who were with him came and subdued the Reph'aim in Ash'teroth-karna'im, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Sha'veh-kiriatha'im, NIV 5 In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim RSV 6 and the Horites in their Mount Se'ir as far as El-paran on the border of the wilderness; NIV 6 and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran near the desert. RSV 7 then they turned back and came to Enmish'pat (that is, Kadesh), and subdued all the country of the Amal'ekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Haz'azon-ta'mar. NIV 7 Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazazon Tamar. RSV 8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomor'rah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboi'im, and the king of Bela (that is, Zo'ar) went out, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim NIV 8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim RSV 9 with Ched-or-lao'mer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goi'im, Am'raphel king of Shinar, and Ar'ioch king of Ella'sar, four kings against five. NIV 9 against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar--four kings against five. RSV 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits; and as the kings of Sodom and Gomor'rah fled, some fell into them, and the rest fled to the mountain. NIV 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills. RSV 11 So the enemy took all the goods of Sodom and Gomor'rah, and all their provisions, and went their way; NIV 11 The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. RSV 12 they also took Lot, the son of Abram's brother, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. NIV 12 They also carried off Abram's nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom. RSV 13 Then one who had escaped came, and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram. NIV 13 One who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshcol and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. RSV 14 When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. NIV 14 When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. RSV 15 And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. NIV 15 During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. RSV 16 Then he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his goods, and the women and the people. NIV 16 He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people. RSV 17 After his return from the defeat of Ched-or-lao'mer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). NIV 17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). RSV 18 And Mel-chiz'edek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. NIV 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, RSV 19 And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; NIV 19 and he blessed Abram, saying, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. RSV 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!" And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. NIV 20 And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. RSV 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself." NIV 21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself." RSV 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have sworn to the LORD God Most High, maker of heaven and earth, NIV 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, and have taken an oath RSV 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal-thong or anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich.' NIV 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the thong of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, 'I made Abram rich.' RSV 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me; let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share." NIV 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me--to Aner, Eshcol and Mamre. Let them have their share."
