Genesis 15

RSV 1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." NIV 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." RSV 2 But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Elie'zer of Damascus?" NIV 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" RSV 3 And Abram said, "Behold, thou hast given me no offspring; and a slave born in my house will be my heir." NIV 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir." RSV 4 And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, "This man shall not be your heir; your own son shall be your heir." NIV 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." RSV 5 And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." NIV 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." RSV 6 And he believed the LORD; and he reckoned it to him as righteousness. NIV 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. RSV 7 And he said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chalde'ans, to give you this land to possess." NIV 7 He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it." RSV 8 But he said, "O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?" NIV 8 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?" RSV 9 He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a she-goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." NIV 9 So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon." RSV 10 And he brought him all these, cut them in two, and laid each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. NIV 10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. RSV 11 And when birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away. NIV 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. RSV 12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram; and lo, a dread and great darkness fell upon him. NIV 12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. RSV 13 Then the LORD said to Abram, "Know of a surety that your descendants will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and will be slaves there, and they will be oppressed for four hundred years; NIV 13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. RSV 14 but I will bring judgment on the nation which they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. NIV 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. RSV 15 As for yourself, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. NIV 15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. RSV 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." NIV 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure." RSV 17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. NIV 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. RSV 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphra'tes, NIV 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates-- RSV 19 the land of the Ken'ites, the Ken'izzites, the Kad'monites, NIV 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, RSV 20 the Hittites, the Per'izzites, the Reph'aim, NIV 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, RSV 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Gir'gashites and the Jeb'usites." NIV 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."
