Genesis 17

CJB 1 When Avram was 99 years old ADONAI appeared to Avram and said to him, "I am El Shaddai [God Almighty]. Walk in my presence and be pure-hearted. NIV 1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. CJB 2 I will make my covenant between me and you, and I will increase your numbers greatly." NIV 2 I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers." CJB 3 Avram fell on his face, and God continued speaking with him: NIV 3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, CJB 4 "As for me, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations. NIV 4 "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. CJB 5 Your name will no longer be Avram [exalted father], but your name will be Avraham [father of many], because I have made you the father of many nations. NIV 5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. CJB 6 I will cause you to be very fruitful. I will make nations of you, kings will descend from you. NIV 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. CJB 7 "I am establishing my covenant between me and you, along with your descendants after you, generation after generation, as an everlasting covenant, to be God for you and for your descendants after you. NIV 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. CJB 8 I will give you and your descendants after you the land in which you are now foreigners, all the land of Kena'an, as a permanent possession; and I will be their God." NIV 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God." CJB 9 God said to Avraham, "As for you, you are to keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you, generation after generation. NIV 9 Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. CJB 10 Here is my covenant, which you are to keep, between me and you, along with your descendants after you: every male among you is to be circumcised. NIV 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. CJB 11 You are to be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; this will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. NIV 11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. CJB 12 Generation after generation, every male among you who is eight days old is to be circumcised, including slaves born within your household and those bought from a foreigner not descended from you. NIV 12 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner--those who are not your offspring. CJB 13 The slave born in your house and the person bought with your money must be circumcised; thus my covenant will be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant. NIV 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. CJB 14 Any uncircumcised male who will not let himself be circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin -that person will be cut off from his people, because he has broken my covenant." NIV 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant." CJB 15 God said to Avraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are not to call her Sarai [mockery]; her name is to be Sarah [princess]. NIV 15 God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. CJB 16 I will bless her; moreover, I will give you a son by her. Truly I will bless her: she will be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." NIV 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." CJB 17 At this Avraham fell on his face and laughed - he thought to himself, "Will a child be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah give birth at ninety?" NIV 17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?" CJB 18 Avraham said to God, "If only Yishma'el could live in your presence!" NIV 18 And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!" CJB 19 God answered, "No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you are to call him Yitz'chak [laughter]. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. NIV 19 Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. CJB 20 But as for Yishma'el, I have heard you. I have blessed him. I will make him fruitful and give him many descendants. He will father twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. NIV 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. CJB 21 But I will establish my covenant with Yitz'chak, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year." NIV 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year." CJB 22 With that, God finished speaking with Avraham and went up from him. NIV 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him. CJB 23 Avraham took Yishma'el his son, all the slaves born in his house and all who had been bought with his money, every male among the people in Avraham's household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin that very day, just as God had said to him. NIV 23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him. CJB 24 Avraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, NIV 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, CJB 25 and Yishma'el his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. NIV 25 and his son Ishmael was thirteen; CJB 26 Avraham and Yishma'el his son were circumcised on the same day; NIV 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that same day. CJB 27 and all the men in his household, both slaves born in his house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. NIV 27 And every male in Abraham's household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.
