Genesis 1

CEB 1 When God began to create the heavens and the earth— NRS 1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, CEB 2 the earth was without shape or form, it was dark over the deep sea, and God's wind swept over the waters— NRS 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. CEB 3 God said, "Let there be light." And so light appeared. NRS 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. CEB 4 God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness. NRS 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. CEB 5 God named the light Day and the darkness Night. There was evening and there was morning: the first day. NRS 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. CEB 6 God said, "Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters to separate the waters from each other." NRS 6 And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." CEB 7 God made the dome and separated the waters under the dome from the waters above the dome. And it happened in that way. NRS 7 So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. CEB 8 God named the dome Sky. There was evening and there was morning: the second day. NRS 8 God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. CEB 9 God said, "Let the waters under the sky come together into one place so that the dry land can appear." And that's what happened. NRS 9 And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. CEB 10 God named the dry land Earth, and he named the gathered waters Seas. God saw how good it was. NRS 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. CEB 11 God said, "Let the earth grow plant life: plants yielding seeds and fruit trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind throughout the earth." And that's what happened. NRS 11 Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it." And it was so. CEB 12 The earth produced plant life: plants yielding seeds, each according to its kind, and trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind. God saw how good it was. NRS 12 The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. CEB 13 There was evening and there was morning: the third day. NRS 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. CEB 14 God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will mark events, sacred seasons, days, and years. NRS 14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, CEB 15 They will be lights in the dome of the sky to shine on the earth." And that's what happened. NRS 15 and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth." And it was so. CEB 16 God made the stars and two great lights: the larger light to rule over the day and the smaller light to rule over the night. NRS 16 God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. CEB 17 God put them in the dome of the sky to shine on the earth, NRS 17 God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, CEB 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw how good it was. NRS 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. CEB 19 There was evening and there was morning: the fourth day. NRS 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. CEB 20 God said, "Let the waters swarm with living things, and let birds fly above the earth up in the dome of the sky." NRS 20 And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky." CEB 21 God created the great sea animals and all the tiny living things that swarm in the waters, each according to its kind, and all the winged birds, each according to its kind. God saw how good it was. NRS 21 So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. CEB 22 Then God blessed them: "Be fertile and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." NRS 22 God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." CEB 23 There was evening and there was morning: the fifth day. NRS 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. CEB 24 God said, "Let the earth produce every kind of living thing: livestock, crawling things, and wildlife." And that's what happened. NRS 24 And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind." And it was so. CEB 25 God made every kind of wildlife, every kind of livestock, and every kind of creature that crawls on the ground. God saw how good it was. NRS 25 God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. CEB 26 Then God said, "Let us make humanity in our image to resemble us so that they may take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and all the crawling things on earth." NRS 26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." CEB 27 God created humanity in God's own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them. NRS 27 So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. CEB 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and master it. Take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, and everything crawling on the ground." NRS 28 God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." CEB 29 Then God said, "I now give to you all the plants on the earth that yield seeds and all the trees whose fruit produces its seeds within it. These will be your food. NRS 29 God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. CEB 30 To all wildlife, to all the birds in the sky, and to everything crawling on the ground—to everything that breathes—I give all the green grasses for food." And that's what happened. NRS 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. CEB 31 God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good. There was evening and there was morning: the sixth day. NRS 31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

NRS 2 And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done.
