Genesis 22

LEB 1 And it happened [that] after these things, God tested Abraham. And he said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I [am]." NIV 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. LEB 2 And he said, "Take your son, your only child, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains where I will tell you." NIV 2 Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." LEB 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled his donkey. And he took two of his servants with him, and Isaac his son. And he chopped wood for a burnt offering. And he got up and went to the place which God had told him. NIV 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. LEB 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and he saw the place at a distance. NIV 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. LEB 5 And Abraham said to his servants, "You stay here with the donkey, and I and the boy will go up there. We will worship, then we will return to you." NIV 5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." LEB 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and placed [it] on Isaac his son. And he took the fire in his hand and the knife, and the two of them went together. NIV 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, LEB 7 And Isaac said to Abraham his father, "My father!" And he said, "Here I [am], my son." And he said, "Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" NIV 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" LEB 8 And Abraham said, "{God will provide} the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went together. NIV 8 Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. LEB 9 And they came to the place that God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood. Then he bound Isaac his son and placed him on the altar atop the wood. NIV 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. LEB 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. NIV 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. LEB 11 And the angel of Yahweh called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham! Abraham!" And he said, "Here I [am]." NIV 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. LEB 12 And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the boy; do not do anything to him. For now I know that you are {one who fears} God, since you have not withheld your son, your only child, from me." NIV 12 "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." LEB 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked. And behold, a ram was caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. NIV 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. LEB 14 And Abraham called the name of that place "Yahweh {will provide}," {for which reason} it is said today, "on the mountain of Yahweh {it shall be provided}." NIV 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided." LEB 15 And the angel of Yahweh called to Abraham a second time from heaven. NIV 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time LEB 16 And he said, "I swear by myself, declares Yahweh, that because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only child, NIV 16 and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, LEB 17 that I will certainly bless you and greatly multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the shore of the sea. And your offspring will take possession of the gate of his enemies. NIV 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, LEB 18 All the nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring, because you have listened to my voice." NIV 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me." LEB 19 And Abraham returned to his servants, and they got up and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived in Beersheba. NIV 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba. LEB 20 And it happened [that] after these things, it was told to Abraham, "Look, Milcah has also borne children to your brother Nahor: NIV 20 Some time later Abraham was told, "Milcah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor: LEB 21 Uz his firstborn and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, NIV 21 Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), LEB 22 and Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." NIV 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel." LEB 23 (Now, Bethuel fathered Rebekah). These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, the brother of Abraham. NIV 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham's brother Nahor. LEB 24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. NIV 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maacah.
