Genesis 23

DBY 1 And the life of Sarah was a hundred and twenty-seven years: [these were] the years of the life of Sarah. NIV 1 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. DBY 2 And Sarah died in Kirjath-Arba: that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. NIV 2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her. DBY 3 And Abraham rose up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, NIV 3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said, DBY 4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you; give me a possession of a sepulchre with you, that I may bury my dead from before me NIV 4 "I am an alien and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead. DBY 5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, NIV 5 The Hittites replied to Abraham, DBY 6 Hear us, my lord: thou art a prince of God among us: in the choicest of our sepulchres bury thy dead: none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre for burying thy dead. NIV 6 "Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead." DBY 7 And Abraham rose up, and bowed down to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth, NIV 7 Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. DBY 8 and spoke to them, saying, If it be your will that I should bury my dead from before me, hear me, and entreat for me Ephron the son of Zohar, NIV 8 He said to them, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf DBY 9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which is his, which is at the end of his field; for the full money let him give it to me amongst you for a possession of a sepulchre. NIV 9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you." DBY 10 And Ephron was dwelling among the sons of Heth. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham, in the ears of the sons of Heth, [even] of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, NIV 10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city. DBY 11 No, my lord: hear me. The field give I thee; and the cave that is in it, to thee I give it; before the eyes of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead. NIV 11 "No, my lord," he said. "Listen to me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead." DBY 12 And Abraham bowed down before the people of the land; NIV 12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land DBY 13 and he spoke to Ephron, in the ears of the people of the land, saying, But if only thou wouldst listen to me, I give the money for the field: take [it] of me, and I will bury my dead there. NIV 13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, "Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there." DBY 14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him NIV 14 Ephron answered Abraham DBY 15 My lord, hearken to me. A field of four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between me and thee? bury therefore thy dead. NIV 15 "Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead." DBY 16 And Abraham hearkened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the money that he had named in the ears of the sons of Heth -- four hundred shekels of silver, current with the merchant. NIV 16 Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants. DBY 17 So the field of Ephron, which was at Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all its borders round about, NIV 17 So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre--both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field--was deeded DBY 18 were assured to Abraham for a possession before the eyes of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city. NIV 18 to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city. DBY 19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at Machpelah, opposite to Mamre: that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan NIV 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan. DBY 20 And the field and the cave that was in it were assured to Abraham for a possession of a sepulchre by the sons of Heth. NIV 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.
