Genesis 23

LEB 1 And {Sarah lived} one hundred and twenty-seven years; [these were] the years of the life of Sarah. NIV 1 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. LEB 2 And Sarah died in Kiriath Arba; that [is] Hebron, in the land of Canaan. NIV 2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her. LEB 3 And Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. And Abraham rose up from his dead, and he spoke to the Hittites [and] said, NIV 3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said, LEB 4 "I [am] a stranger and an alien among you; give to me {my own burial site} among you so that I may bury my dead from before me. NIV 4 "I am an alien and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead. LEB 5 And the Hittites answered Abraham [and] said to him, NIV 5 The Hittites replied to Abraham, LEB 6 "Hear us, my lord, you [are] a mighty prince in our midst. Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial sites. None of us {will withhold his burial site} from you [for] burying your dead." NIV 6 "Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead." LEB 7 And Abraham rose up and bowed to the people of the land, to the Hittites. NIV 7 Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. LEB 8 And he spoke with them, saying, "{If you are willing} [that] I bury my dead from before me, hear me and intercede for me with Ephron the son of Zohar, NIV 8 He said to them, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf LEB 9 that he may sell to me the cave of Machpelah which {belongs to him}, which [is] at the end of his field. At full value let him sell [it] to me in your midst as {a burial site}." NIV 9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you." LEB 10 Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites with respect to all [who were] entering the gate of his city, [and] said, NIV 10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city. LEB 11 "No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field and the cave which [is] in it, I [also] give it to you in the sight of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead." NIV 11 "No, my lord," he said. "Listen to me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead." LEB 12 And Abraham bowed before the people of the land. NIV 12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land LEB 13 And he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, "{If only you will hear me}--I give the price of the field. Take [it] from me that I may bury my dead there." NIV 13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, "Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there." LEB 14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him NIV 14 Ephron answered Abraham LEB 15 "My lord, hear me. A [piece of] land [worth] four hundred shekels of silver--what [is] that between me and you? Bury your dead." NIV 15 "Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead." LEB 16 Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver {at the merchants' current rate}. NIV 16 Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants. LEB 17 So the field of Ephron which [was] in the Machpelah, which [was] near Mamre--the field and the cave which [was] in it, with all the trees that [were] in the field, which [were] within all its surrounding boundaries--{passed} NIV 17 So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre--both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field--was deeded LEB 18 to Abraham as a property in the presence of the Hittites, with respect to all [who were] entering the gate of his city. NIV 18 to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city. LEB 19 And thus afterward Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah near Mamre; that [is] Hebron, in the land of Canaan NIV 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan. LEB 20 And the field and the cave which [was] in it {passed} to Abraham as {a burial site} from the Hittites. NIV 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.
