Genesis 24

WEB 1 Abraham was old, and well stricken in age. Yahweh had blessed Abraham in all things. NIV 1 Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. WEB 2 Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had, "Please put your hand under my thigh. NIV 2 He said to the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, "Put your hand under my thigh. WEB 3 I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live. NIV 3 I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, WEB 4 But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac." NIV 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac." WEB 5 The servant said to him, "What if the woman isn't willing to follow me to this land? Must I bring your son again to the land you came from?" NIV 5 The servant asked him, "What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?" WEB 6 Abraham said to him, "Beware that you don't bring my son there again. NIV 6 "Make sure that you do not take my son back there," Abraham said. WEB 7 Yahweh, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, 'To your descendants I will give this land.' He will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. NIV 7 "The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father's household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, 'To your offspring I will give this land'--he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there. WEB 8 If the woman isn't willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this my oath. Only you shall not bring my son there again." NIV 8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there." WEB 9 The servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter. NIV 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter. WEB 10 The servant took ten camels, of his master's camels, and departed, having all goodly things of his master's in his hand. He arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. NIV 10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and left, taking with him all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor. WEB 11 He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water. NIV 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water. WEB 12 He said, "Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. NIV 12 Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. WEB 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. The daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. NIV 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. WEB 14 Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, 'Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink.' She will say, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink.' Let the same be she who you have appointed for your servant Isaac. Thereby will I know that you have shown kindness to my master." NIV 14 May it be that when I say to a girl, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too'--let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master." WEB 15 It happened, before he had done speaking, that behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher on her shoulder. NIV 15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor. WEB 16 The young lady was very beautiful to look at, a virgin, neither had any man known her. She went down to the spring, filled her pitcher, and came up. NIV 16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again. WEB 17 The servant ran to meet her, and said, "Please give me a drink, a little water from your pitcher." NIV 17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, "Please give me a little water from your jar." WEB 18 She said, "Drink, my lord." She hurried, and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him drink. NIV 18 "Drink, my lord," she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. WEB 19 When she had done giving him drink, she said, "I will also draw for your camels, until they have done drinking." NIV 19 After she had given him a drink, she said, "I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking." WEB 20 She hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw, and drew for all his camels. NIV 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. WEB 21 The man looked steadfastly at her, holding his peace, to know whether Yahweh had made his journey prosperous or not. NIV 21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful. WEB 22 It happened, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold, NIV 22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels. WEB 23 and said, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father's house for us to lodge in?" NIV 23 Then he asked, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?" WEB 24 She said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor." NIV 24 She answered him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to Nahor." WEB 25 She said moreover to him, "We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in." NIV 25 And she added, "We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night." WEB 26 The man bowed his head, and worshiped Yahweh. NIV 26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD, WEB 27 He said, "Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his lovingkindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, Yahweh has led me in the way to the house of my master's relatives." NIV 27 saying, "Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master's relatives." WEB 28 The young lady ran, and told her mother's house about these words. NIV 28 The girl ran and told her mother's household about these things. WEB 29 Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. Laban ran out to the man, to the spring. NIV 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring. WEB 30 It happened, when he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, "This is what the man said to me," that he came to the man. Behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. NIV 30 As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister's arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. WEB 31 He said, "Come in, you blessed of Yahweh. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels." NIV 31 "Come, you who are blessed by the LORD," he said. "Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels." WEB 32 The man came into the house, and he unloaded the camels. He gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. NIV 32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet. WEB 33 Food was set before him to eat. But he said, "I will not eat until I have told my message." He said, "Speak on." NIV 33 Then food was set before him, but he said, "I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say." "Then tell us," [Laban] said. WEB 34 He said, "I am Abraham's servant. NIV 34 So he said, "I am Abraham's servant. WEB 35 Yahweh has blessed my master greatly. He has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, men-servants and maid-servants, and camels and donkeys. NIV 35 The LORD has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, and camels and donkeys. WEB 36 Sarah, my master's wife, bore a son to my master when she was old. He has given all that he has to him. NIV 36 My master's wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns. WEB 37 My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, NIV 37 And my master made me swear an oath, and said, 'You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, WEB 38 but you shall go to my father's house, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.' NIV 38 but go to my father's family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.' WEB 39 I said to my master, 'What if the woman will not follow me?' NIV 39 "Then I asked my master, 'What if the woman will not come back with me?' WEB 40 He said to me, 'Yahweh, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son of my relatives, and of my father's house. NIV 40 "He replied, 'The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father's family. WEB 41 Then will you be clear from my oath, when you come to my relatives. If they don't give her to you, you shall be clear from my oath.' NIV 41 Then, when you go to my clan, you will be released from my oath even if they refuse to give her to you--you will be released from my oath.' WEB 42 I came this day to the spring, and said, 'Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, if now you do prosper my way which I go. NIV 42 "When I came to the spring today, I said, 'O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come. WEB 43 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let it happen, that the maiden who comes forth to draw, to whom I will say, Give me, I pray you, a little water from your pitcher to drink. NIV 43 See, I am standing beside this spring; if a maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, "Please let me drink a little water from your jar," WEB 44 She will tell me, "Drink, and I will also draw for your camels." Let the same be the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for my master's son.' NIV 44 and if she says to me, "Drink, and I'll draw water for your camels too," let her be the one the LORD has chosen for my master's son.' WEB 45 Before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, 'Please let me drink.' NIV 45 "Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, 'Please give me a drink.' WEB 46 She hurried and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink.' So I drank, and she made the camels drink also. NIV 46 "She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too.' So I drank, and she watered the camels also. WEB 47 I asked her, and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' She said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare to him.' I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands. NIV 47 "I asked her, 'Whose daughter are you?' "She said, 'The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' "Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms, WEB 48 I bowed my head, and worshiped Yahweh, and blessed Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter for his son. NIV 48 and I bowed down and worshiped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master's brother for his son. WEB 49 Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. If not, tell me. That I may turn to the right hand, or to the left." NIV 49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn." WEB 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, "The thing proceeds from Yahweh. We can't speak to you bad or good. NIV 50 Laban and Bethuel answered, "This is from the LORD; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. WEB 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her, and go, and let her be your master's son's wife, as Yahweh has spoken." NIV 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has directed." WEB 52 It happened that when Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the earth to Yahweh. NIV 52 When Abraham's servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD. WEB 53 The servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. NIV 53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother. WEB 54 They ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed all night. They rose up in the morning, and he said, "Send me away to my master." NIV 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, "Send me on my way to my master." WEB 55 Her brother and her mother said, "Let the young lady stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that she will go." NIV 55 But her brother and her mother replied, "Let the girl remain with us ten days or so; then you may go." WEB 56 He said to them, "Don't hinder me, seeing Yahweh has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master." NIV 56 But he said to them, "Do not detain me, now that the LORD has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master." WEB 57 They said, "We will call the young lady, and ask her." NIV 57 Then they said, "Let's call the girl and ask her about it." WEB 58 They called Rebekah, and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" She said, "I will go." NIV 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, "Will you go with this man?" "I will go," she said. WEB 59 They sent away Rebekah, their sister, with her nurse, Abraham's servant, and his men. NIV 59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham's servant and his men. WEB 60 They blessed Rebekah, and said to her, "Our sister, may you be the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let your seed possess the gate of those who hate them." NIV 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, "Our sister, may you increase to thousands upon thousands; may your offspring possess the gates of their enemies." WEB 61 Rebekah arose with her ladies. They rode on the camels, and followed the man. The servant took Rebekah, and went his way. NIV 61 Then Rebekah and her maids got ready and mounted their camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left. WEB 62 Isaac came from the way of Beer-lahai-roi. For he lived in the land of the South. NIV 62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev. WEB 63 Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the evening. He lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, there were camels coming. NIV 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching. WEB 64 Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel. NIV 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel WEB 65 She said to the servant, "Who is the man who is walking in the field to meet us?" The servant said, "It is my master." She took her veil, and covered herself. NIV 65 and asked the servant, "Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?" "He is my master," the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself. WEB 66 The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. NIV 66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. WEB 67 Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. He loved her. Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. NIV 67 Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
