Genesis 28

CJB 1 So Yitz'chak called Ya'akov, and, after blessing him, charged him: "You are not to choose a wife from the Hitti women. NIV 1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. CJB 2 Go now to the home of B'tu'el your mother's father, and choose a wife there from the daughters of Lavan your mother's brother. NIV 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother. CJB 3 May El Shaddai bless you, make you fruitful and increase your descendants, until they become a whole assembly of peoples. NIV 3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. CJB 4 And may he give you the blessing which he gave Avraham, you and your descendants with you, so that you will possess the land you will travel through, the land God gave to Avraham." NIV 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham." CJB 5 So Yitz'chak sent Ya'akov away; and he went to Paddan-Aram, to Lavan, son of B'tu'el the Arami, the brother of Rivkah Ya'akov's and 'Esav's mother. NIV 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau. CJB 6 Now 'Esav saw that Yitz'chak had blessed Ya'akov and sent him away to Paddan-Aram to choose a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he charged him, "You are not to choose a Kena'ani woman as your wife," NIV 6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman," CJB 7 and that Ya'akov had listened to his father and mother and gone to Paddan-Aram. NIV 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. CJB 8 'Esav also saw that the Kena'ani women did not please Yitz'chak his father. NIV 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; CJB 9 So 'Esav went to Yishma'el and took, in addition to the wives he already had, Machalat the daughter of Yishma'el Avraham's son, the sister of N'vayot, to be his wife. NIV 9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had. CJB 10 Ya'akov went out from Be'er-Sheva and traveled toward Haran. NIV 10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. CJB 11 He came to a certain place and stayed the night there, because the sun had set. He took a stone from the place, put it under his head and lay down there to sleep. NIV 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. CJB 12 He dreamt that there before him was a ladder resting on the ground with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of ADONAI were going up and down on it. NIV 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. CJB 13 Then suddenly ADONAI was standing there next to him; and he said, "I am ADONAI, the God of Avraham your [grand]father and the God of Yitz'chak. The land on which you are lying I will give to you and to your descendants. NIV 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. CJB 14 Your descendants will be as numerous as the grains of dust on the earth. You will expand to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. By you and your descendants all the families of the earth will be blessed. NIV 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. CJB 15 Look, I am with you. I will guard you wherever you go, and I will bring you back into this land, because I won't leave you until I have done what I have promised you." NIV 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." CJB 16 Ya'akov awoke from his sleep and said, "Truly, ADONAI is in this place - and I didn't know it!" NIV 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it." CJB 17 Then he became afraid and said, "This place is fearsome! This has to be the house of God! This is the gate of heaven!" NIV 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven." CJB 18 Ya'akov got up early in the morning, took the stone he had put under his head, set it up as a standing-stone, poured olive oil on its top NIV 18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. CJB 19 and named the place Beit-El [house of God]; but the town had originally been called Luz. NIV 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz. CJB 20 Ya'akov took this vow: "If God will be with me and will guard me on this road that I am traveling, giving me bread to eat and clothes to wear, NIV 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear CJB 21 so that I return to my father's house in peace, then ADONAI will be my God; NIV 21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God CJB 22 and this stone, which I have set up as a standing-stone, will be God's house; and of everything you give me, I will faithfully return one-tenth to you." NIV 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
