Genesis 28

RHE 1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, saying: Take not a wife of the stock of Chanaan: NIV 1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. RHE 2 But go, and take a journey to Mesopotamia of Syria, to the house of Bathuel, thy mother’s father, and take thee a wife thence of the daughters of Laban, thy uncle. NIV 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother. RHE 3 And God almighty bless thee, and make thee to increase and multiply thee: that thou mayst be a multitude of people. NIV 3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. RHE 4 And give the blessings of Abraham to thee, and to thy seed after thee: that thou mayst possess the land of thy sojournment, which he promised to thy grandfather. NIV 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham." RHE 5 And when Isaac had sent him away, he took his journey and went to Mesopotamia of Syria, to Laban, the son of Bathuel, the Syrian, brother to Rebecca, his mother. NIV 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau. RHE 6 And Esau seeing that his father had blessed Jacob, and had sent him into Mesopotamia of Syria, to marry a wife thence; and that after the blessing he had charged him, saying: Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Chanaan: NIV 6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman," RHE 7 And that Jacob obeying his parents, was gone into Syria: NIV 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. RHE 8 Experiencing also, that his father was not well pleased with the daughters of Chanaan: NIV 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; RHE 9 He went to Ismael, and took to wife, besides them he had before, Maheleth, the daughter of Ismael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nabajoth. NIV 9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had. RHE 10 But Jacob being departed from Bersabee, went on to Haran. NIV 10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. RHE 11 And when he was come to a certain place, and would rest in it after sunset, he took of the stones that lay there, and putting under his head, slept in the same place. NIV 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. RHE 12 And he saw in his sleep a ladder standing upon the earth, and the top thereof touching heaven: the angels also of God ascending and descending by it. NIV 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. RHE 13 And the Lord leaning upon the ladder saying to him: I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: The land, wherein thou sleepest, I will give to thee and to thy seed. NIV 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. RHE 14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth: thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and IN THEE and thy seed, all the tribes of the earth SHALL BE BLESSED. NIV 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. RHE 15 And I will be thy keeper whithersoever thou goest, and will bring thee back into this land: neither will I leave thee, till I shall have accomplished all that I have said. NIV 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." RHE 16 And when Jacob awaked out of sleep, he said: Indeed the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not. NIV 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it." RHE 17 And trembling, he said: How terrible is this place? this is no other but the house of God, and the gate of heaven. NIV 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven." RHE 18 And Jacob arising in the morning, took the stone which he had laid under his head, and set it up for a title, pouring oil upon the top of it. NIV 18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. RHE 19 And he called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Luza. NIV 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz. RHE 20 And he made a vow, saying: If God shall be with me, and shall keep me in the way, by which I walk, and shall give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, NIV 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear RHE 21 And I shall return prosperously to my father’s house: the Lord shall be my God: NIV 21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God RHE 22 And this stone, which I have set up for a title, shall be called the house of God: and of all things that thou shalt give to me, I will offer tithes to thee. NIV 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
