Genesis 2:4-25

HNV

NIV

4 This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the eretz when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made eretz and the heavens.
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.
5 No plant of the field was yet in the eretz, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the eretz. There was not a man to till the ground,
5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,
6 but a mist went up from the eretz, and watered the whole surface of the ground.
6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7 The LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
8 The LORD God planted a garden eastward, in `Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
9 Out of the ground the LORD God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
9 The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river went out of `Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became four heads.
10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
11 The name of the first is Pishon: this is the one which flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12 and the gold of that land is good. There is aromatic resin and the shoham stone.
12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.)
13 The name of the second river is Gichon: the same river that flows through the whole land of Kush.
13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.
14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel: this is the one which flows in front of Ashshur. The fourth river is the Perat.
14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of `Eden to dress it and to keep it.
15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat:
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die."
17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
18 The LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him."
18 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
20 The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper suitable for him.
20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
21 The LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
22 He made the rib, which the LORD God had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man.
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."
23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 They were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
