Genesis 3

CJB 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any wild animal which ADONAI, God, had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You are not to eat from any tree in the garden'?" NIV 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" CJB 2 The woman answered the serpent, "We may eat from the fruit of the trees of the garden, NIV 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, CJB 3 but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, 'You are neither to eat from it nor touch it, or you will die.'" NIV 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' " CJB 4 The serpent said to the woman, "It is not true that you will surely die; NIV 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. CJB 5 because God knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." NIV 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." CJB 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it had a pleasing appearance and that the tree was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her; and he ate. NIV 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. CJB 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together to make themselves loincloths. NIV 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. CJB 8 They heard the voice of ADONAI, God, walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, so the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of ADONAI, God, among the trees in the garden. NIV 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. CJB 9 ADONAI, God, called to the man, "Where are you?" NIV 9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" CJB 10 He answered, "I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself." NIV 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." CJB 11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I ordered you not to eat?" NIV 11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" CJB 12 The man replied, "The woman you gave to be with me - she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate." NIV 12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." CJB 13 ADONAI, God, said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman answered, "The serpent tricked me, so I ate." NIV 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." CJB 14 ADONAI, God, said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all livestock and wild animals. You will crawl on your belly and eat dust as long as you live. NIV 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. CJB 15 I will put animosity between you and the woman, and between your descendant and her descendant; he will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel." NIV 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." CJB 16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pain in childbirth. You will bring forth children in pain. Your desire will be toward your husband, but he will rule over you." NIV 16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." CJB 17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to what your wife said and ate from the tree about which I gave you the order, 'You are not to eat from it,' the ground is cursed on your account; you will work hard to eat from it as long as you live. NIV 17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. CJB 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat field plants. NIV 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. CJB 19 You will eat bread by the sweat of your forehead till you return to the ground - for you were taken out of it: you are dust, and you will return to dust." NIV 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." CJB 20 The man called his wife Havah [life], because she was the mother of all living. NIV 20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. CJB 21 ADONAI, God, made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. NIV 21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. CJB 22 ADONAI, God, said, "See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, to prevent his putting out his hand and taking also from the tree of life, eating, and living forever -" NIV 22 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." CJB 23 therefore ADONAI, God, sent him out of the garden of 'Eden to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. NIV 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. CJB 24 So he drove the man out, and he placed at the east of the garden of 'Eden the k'ruvim and a flaming sword which turned in every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. NIV 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
