Genesis 34

HNV 1 Dinah, the daughter of Le'ah, whom she bore to Ya`akov, went out to see the daughters of the land. NIV 1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. HNV 2 Shekhem the son of Hamor the Hivvi, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and humbled her. NIV 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her. HNV 3 His soul joined to Dinah, the daughter of Ya`akov, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady. NIV 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her. HNV 4 Shekhem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, "Get me this young lady as a wife." NIV 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife." HNV 5 Now Ya`akov heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his cattle in the field. Ya`akov held his shalom until they came. NIV 5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home. HNV 6 Hamor the father of Shekhem went out to Ya`akov to talk with him. NIV 6 Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. HNV 7 The sons of Ya`akov came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Yisra'el in lying with Ya`akov's daughter; which thing ought not to be done. NIV 7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done. HNV 8 Hamor talked with them, saying, "The soul of my son, Shekhem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. NIV 8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife. HNV 9 Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. NIV 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. HNV 10 You shall dwell with us: and the land will be before you. Live and trade in it, and get possessions in it." NIV 10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it." HNV 11 Shekhem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give. NIV 11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. HNV 12 Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife." NIV 12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife." HNV 13 The sons of Ya`akov answered Shekhem and Hamor his father with deceit, and spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister, NIV 13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. HNV 14 and said to them, "We can't do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us. NIV 14 They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us. HNV 15 Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised; NIV 15 We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males. HNV 16 then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. NIV 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you. HNV 17 But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and we will be gone. NIV 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go." HNV 18 Their words pleased Hamor, and Shekhem, Hamor's son. NIV 18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. HNV 19 The young man didn't wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Ya`akov's daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father. NIV 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. HNV 20 Hamor and Shekhem, his son, came to the gate of their city, and talked with the men of their city, saying, NIV 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen. HNV 21 "These men are peaceful with us. Therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For, behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters. NIV 21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. HNV 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to become one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised. NIV 22 But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. HNV 23 Won't their cattle and their substance and all their animals be ours? Only let us give our consent to them, and they will dwell with us." NIV 23 Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us." HNV 24 All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor, and to Shekhem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city. NIV 24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised. HNV 25 It happened on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Ya`akov's sons, Shim`on and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males. NIV 25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. HNV 26 They killed Hamor and Shekhem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shekhem's house, and went away. NIV 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left. HNV 27 Ya`akov's sons came on the dead, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. NIV 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled. HNV 28 They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, that which was in the city, that which was in the field; NIV 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields. HNV 29 and all their wealth. They took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the house. NIV 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses. HNV 30 Ya`akov said to Shim`on and Levi, "You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Kana`anim and the Perizzi. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house." NIV 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed." HNV 31 They said, "Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?" NIV 31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"
