Genesis 34

LEB 1 Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. NIV 1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. LEB 2 And Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. And he took her and lay with her and raped her. NIV 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her. LEB 3 And his soul clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke {tenderly} to the girl. NIV 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her. LEB 4 So Shechem said to Hamor his father, saying, "Get this girl for me as a wife." NIV 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife." LEB 5 And Jacob heard that Dinah his daughter had been defiled, but his sons were with his flocks in the field. And Jacob kept silent until they came. NIV 5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home. LEB 6 And Hamor, father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him. NIV 6 Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. LEB 7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard [it]. And the men were distressed and very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by having sexual relations with the daughter of Jacob--{something that} should not be done. NIV 7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done. LEB 8 And Hamor spoke with them saying, "Shechem my son {is in love with} your daughter. Please give her to him for a wife. NIV 8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife. LEB 9 Make marriages with us. Give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. NIV 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. LEB 10 You shall dwell with us and the land shall be before you; settle and trade in it, and acquire [property] in it." NIV 10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it." LEB 11 Then Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will do. NIV 11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. LEB 12 {Make the bride price and gift as high as you like}; I will give what you say to me. But give me the girl as a wife." NIV 12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife." LEB 13 Then the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor speaking deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. NIV 13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. LEB 14 And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who [is] uncircumcised, for that [is] a disgrace for us. NIV 14 They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us. LEB 15 Only on this [condition] will we give consent to you; if you will become like us--every male among you to be circumcised. NIV 15 We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males. LEB 16 Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take for ourselves your daughters, and we will live with you and become one family. NIV 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you. LEB 17 But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughters and we will go." NIV 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go." LEB 18 And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and in the eyes of Shechem, the son of Hamor. NIV 18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. LEB 19 And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he wanted the daughter of Jacob. Now he [was] the most honored of his father's house. NIV 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. LEB 20 Then Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city, and they spoke to the men of their city, saying, NIV 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen. LEB 21 "These men [are] at peace with us. Let them dwell in the land and let them trade in it. Now, behold, the land is {broad enough for them}. Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give our daughters to them. NIV 21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. LEB 22 Only on this [condition] will they give consent to us, to live with us [and] to become one family--when every male among us [is] circumcised as they are circumcised. NIV 22 But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. LEB 23 Will not their livestock and their property and all their animals [be] ours? Only let us give consent to them so they will live among us." NIV 23 Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us." LEB 24 And all those who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and Shechem. Every male was circumcised, all those who went out of the gate of his city. NIV 24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised. LEB 25 And it happened [that] on the third day, while they were in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, each took his sword and came against the unsuspecting city and killed all the males. NIV 25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. LEB 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah from the house of Shechem and went out. NIV 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left. LEB 27 The [other] sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. NIV 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled. LEB 28 They took their flocks and their cattle and their donkeys, and whatever [was] in the field. NIV 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields. LEB 29 They captured and plundered all that [was] in the houses--all their wealth, their little ones, and their women. NIV 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses. LEB 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me, making me stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites! I [am] few in number! If they gather against me and attack me, I will be destroyed--I and my household!" NIV 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed." LEB 31 But they said, "Shall he treat our sister like a prostitute?" NIV 31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"
