RSV 1 Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land; NIV 1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. RSV 2 and when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humbled her. NIV 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her. RSV 3 And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob; he loved the maiden and spoke tenderly to her. NIV 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her. RSV 4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this maiden for my wife." NIV 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife." RSV 5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his cattle in the field, so Jacob held his peace until they came. NIV 5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home. RSV 6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. NIV 6 Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. RSV 7 The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard of it; and the men were indignant and very angry, because he had wrought folly in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done. NIV 7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done. RSV 8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; I pray you, give her to him in marriage. NIV 8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife. RSV 9 Make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. NIV 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. RSV 10 You shall dwell with us; and the land shall be open to you; dwell and trade in it, and get property in it." NIV 10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it." RSV 11 Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give. NIV 11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. RSV 12 Ask of me ever so much as marriage present and gift, and I will give according as you say to me; only give me the maiden to be my wife." NIV 12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife." RSV 13 The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. NIV 13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. RSV 14 They said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. NIV 14 They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us. RSV 15 Only on this condition will we consent to you: that you will become as we are and every male of you be circumcised. NIV 15 We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males. RSV 16 Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people. NIV 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you. RSV 17 But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone." NIV 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go." RSV 18 Their words pleased Hamor and Hamor's son Shechem. NIV 18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. RSV 19 And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. Now he was the most honored of all his family. NIV 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. RSV 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying, NIV 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen. RSV 21 "These men are friendly with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters in marriage, and let us give them our daughters. NIV 21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. RSV 22 Only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised. NIV 22 But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. RSV 23 Will not their cattle, their property and all their beasts be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us." NIV 23 Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us." RSV 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and his son Shechem; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city. NIV 24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised. RSV 25 On the third day, when they were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came upon the city unawares, and killed all the males. NIV 25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. RSV 26 They slew Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went away. NIV 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left. RSV 27 And the sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled; NIV 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled. RSV 28 they took their flocks and their herds, their asses, and whatever was in the city and in the field; NIV 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields. RSV 29 all their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and made their prey. NIV 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses. RSV 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me odious to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Per'izzites; my numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household." NIV 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed." RSV 31 But they said, "Should he treat our sister as a harlot?" NIV 31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"
