Genesis 38

HNV 1 It happened at that time, that Yehudah went down from his brothers, and turned in to a certain `Adullami, whose name was Hirah. NIV 1 At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah. HNV 2 Yehudah saw there a daughter of a certain Kana`ani whose name was Shu`a. He took her, and went in to her. NIV 2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and lay with her; HNV 3 She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him `Er. NIV 3 she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er. HNV 4 She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan. NIV 4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan. HNV 5 She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelach: and he was at Keziv, when she bore him. NIV 5 She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him. HNV 6 Yehudah took a wife for `Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. NIV 6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. HNV 7 `Er, Yehudah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD. The LORD killed him. NIV 7 But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death. HNV 8 Yehudah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her, and raise up seed to your brother." NIV 8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." HNV 9 Onan knew that the seed wouldn't be his; and it happened, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother. NIV 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. HNV 10 The thing which he did was evil in the sight of the LORD, and he killed him also. NIV 10 What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also. HNV 11 Then Yehudah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house, until Shelach, my son, is grown up;" for he said, "Lest he also die, like his brothers." Tamar went and lived in her father's house. NIV 11 Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." For he thought, "He may die too, just like his brothers." So Tamar went to live in her father's house. HNV 12 After many days, Shu`a's daughter, the wife of Yehudah, died. Yehudah was comforted, and went up to his sheep-shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the `Adullami. NIV 12 After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him. HNV 13 It was told Tamar, saying, "Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep." NIV 13 When Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep," HNV 14 She took off of her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of `Enayim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelach was grown up, and she wasn't given to him as a wife. NIV 14 she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife. HNV 15 When Yehudah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. NIV 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. HNV 16 He turned to her by the way, and said, "Please come, let me come in to you:" for he didn't know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?" NIV 16 Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you." "And what will you give me to sleep with you?" she asked. HNV 17 He said, "I will send you a kid of the goats from the flock." She said, "Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?" NIV 17 "I'll send you a young goat from my flock," he said. "Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?" she asked. HNV 18 He said, "What pledge will I give you?" She said, "Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him. NIV 18 He said, "What pledge should I give you?" "Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand," she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. HNV 19 She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. NIV 19 After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow's clothes again. HNV 20 Yehudah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend, the `Adullami, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand, but he didn't find her. NIV 20 Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her. HNV 21 Then he asked the men of her place, saying, "Where is the prostitute, that was at `Enayim by the road?" They said, "There has been no prostitute here." NIV 21 He asked the men who lived there, "Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?" "There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here," they said. HNV 22 He returned to Yehudah, and said, "I haven't found her; and also the men of the place said, 'There has been no prostitute here.'" NIV 22 So he went back to Judah and said, "I didn't find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, 'There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here.' " HNV 23 Yehudah said, "Let her keep it, lest we be put to shame. Behold, I sent this kid, and you haven't found her." NIV 23 Then Judah said, "Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn't find her." HNV 24 It happened about three months later, that it was told Yehudah, saying, "Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute; and moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution." Yehudah said, "Bring her forth, and let her be burnt." NIV 24 About three months later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant." Judah said, "Bring her out and have her burned to death!" HNV 25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man, whose these are, I am with child." She also said, "Please discern whose are these - the signet, and the cords, and the staff." NIV 25 As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. "I am pregnant by the man who owns these," she said. And she added, "See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are." HNV 26 Yehudah acknowledged them, and said, "She is more righteous than I, because I didn't give her to Shelach, my son." He knew her again no more. NIV 26 Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again. HNV 27 It happened in the time of her travail, that behold, twins were in her womb. NIV 27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. HNV 28 It happened, when she travailed, that one put out a hand: and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, "This came out first." NIV 28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, "This one came out first." HNV 29 It happened, as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out, and she said, "Why have you made a breach for yourself?" Therefore his name was called Peretz. NIV 29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez. HNV 30 Afterward his brother came out, that had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerach. NIV 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out and he was given the name Zerah.
