Genesis 45

NRS 1 Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, "Send everyone away from me." So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. NIV 1 Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants, and he cried out, "Have everyone leave my presence!" So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. NRS 2 And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. NIV 2 And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh's household heard about it. NRS 3 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence. NIV 3 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father still living?" But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence. NRS 4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer to me." And they came closer. He said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. NIV 4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come close to me." When they had done so, he said, "I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! NRS 5 And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. NIV 5 And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. NRS 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. NIV 6 For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will not be plowing and reaping. NRS 7 God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. NIV 7 But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. NRS 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. NIV 8 "So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. NRS 9 Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, "Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. NIV 9 Now hurry back to my father and say to him, 'This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don't delay. NRS 10 You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. NIV 10 You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me--you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. NRS 11 I will provide for you there—since there are five more years of famine to come—so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty.' NIV 11 I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.' NRS 12 And now your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is my own mouth that speaks to you. NIV 12 "You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is really I who am speaking to you. NRS 13 You must tell my father how greatly I am honored in Egypt, and all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here." NIV 13 Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly." NRS 14 Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, while Benjamin wept upon his neck. NIV 14 Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. NRS 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him. NIV 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him. NRS 16 When the report was heard in Pharaoh's house, "Joseph's brothers have come," Pharaoh and his servants were pleased. NIV 16 When the news reached Pharaoh's palace that Joseph's brothers had come, Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased. NRS 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Say to your brothers, "Do this: load your animals and go back to the land of Canaan. NIV 18 and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land.' NRS 19 You are further charged to say, "Do this: take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. NIV 19 "You are also directed to tell them, 'Do this: Take some carts from Egypt for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. NRS 20 Give no thought to your possessions, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.' " NIV 20 Never mind about your belongings, because the best of all Egypt will be yours.' " NRS 21 The sons of Israel did so. Joseph gave them wagons according to the instruction of Pharaoh, and he gave them provisions for the journey. NIV 21 So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey. NRS 22 To each one of them he gave a set of garments; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five sets of garments. NIV 22 To each of them he gave new clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels of silver and five sets of clothes. NRS 23 To his father he sent the following: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and provision for his father on the journey. NIV 23 And this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey. NRS 24 Then he sent his brothers on their way, and as they were leaving he said to them, "Do not quarrel along the way." NIV 24 Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, "Don't quarrel on the way!" NRS 25 So they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. NIV 25 So they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. NRS 26 And they told him, "Joseph is still alive! He is even ruler over all the land of Egypt." He was stunned; he could not believe them. NIV 26 They told him, "Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt." Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them. NRS 27 But when they told him all the words of Joseph that he had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. NIV 27 But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. NRS 28 Israel said, "Enough! My son Joseph is still alive. I must go and see him before I die." NIV 28 And Israel said, "I'm convinced! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die."
