1 And Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.
1 So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
2 And God spoke unto Israel in visions of the night and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here <em>am</em> I.
2 And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “Here I am,” he replied.
3 And he said, I <em>am</em> the God, the God of thy father; fear not to go down into Egypt; for there I will make of thee a great people.
3 “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.
4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up <em>again</em>; and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
4 I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.”
5 And Jacob rose up from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel took Jacob their father and their little ones and their wives in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
5 Then Jacob left Beersheba, and Israel’s sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him.
6 And they took their cattle and their goods which they had gotten in the land of Canaan and came into Egypt, Jacob and all his seed with him,
6 So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt, taking with them their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in Canaan.
7 his sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and all his seed he brought with him into Egypt.
7 Jacob brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.
8 And these <em>are</em> the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn.
8 These are the names of the sons of Israel (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob.
9 And the sons of Reuben: Enoch, Phallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife: Joseph and Benjamin.

20 And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On gave birth unto him.

21 And the sons of Benjamin <em>were</em> Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
21 The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.
22 These <em>are</em> the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob, <em>in</em> all, fourteen souls.

23 And the sons of Dan: Hushim.

26 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls <em>were</em> sixty-six;
26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.
27 and the sons of Joseph, who were born him in Egypt, <em>were</em> two souls. All the souls of the house of Jacob, who came into Egypt, <em>were</em> seventy.
27 With the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy in all.
28 And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.
28 Now Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When they arrived in the region of Goshen,
29 And Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and manifested himself unto him; and he fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.
29 Joseph had his chariot made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time.
30 Then Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die since I have seen thy face because thou <em>art</em> yet alive.
30 Israel said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”
31 And Joseph said unto his brethren and unto his father’s house, I will go up and tell Pharaoh and say unto him, My brethren and my father’s house, who <em>were</em> in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;
31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
32 and the men <em>are</em> pastors of sheep, for their trade has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their sheep and their cows and all that they have.
32 The men are shepherds; they tend livestock, and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’
33 And it shall come to pass when Pharaoh shall call you and shall say, What <em>is</em> your occupation?
33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’
34 Then ye shall say, Thy slaves’ trade has been about livestock from our youth even until now, both we <em>and</em> also our fathers, that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every pastor of sheep <em>is</em> an abomination unto the Egyptians.
34 you should answer, ‘Your servants have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.”
