Genesis 46

RSV 1 So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. NIV 1 So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. RSV 2 And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night, and said, "Jacob, Jacob." And he said, "Here am I." NIV 2 And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, "Jacob! Jacob!" "Here I am," he replied. RSV 3 Then he said, "I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt; for I will there make of you a great nation. NIV 3 "I am God, the God of your father," he said. "Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. RSV 4 I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again; and Joseph's hand shall close your eyes." NIV 4 I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes." RSV 5 Then Jacob set out from Beer-sheba; and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. NIV 5 Then Jacob left Beersheba, and Israel's sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. RSV 6 They also took their cattle and their goods, which they had gained in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him, NIV 6 They also took with them their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt. RSV 7 his sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters; all his offspring he brought with him into Egypt. NIV 7 He took with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters--all his offspring. RSV 8 Now these are the names of the descendants of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons. Reuben, Jacob's first-born, NIV 8 These are the names of the sons of Israel (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob. RSV 10 The sons of Simeon: Jemu'el, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanitish woman. RSV 12 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan); and the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. RSV 13 The sons of Is'sachar: Tola, Puvah, Iob, and Shimron. NIV 13 The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub and Shimron. RSV 14 The sons of Zeb'ulun: Sered, Elon, and Jah'leel NIV 14 The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon and Jahleel. RSV 15 (these are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, together with his daughter Dinah; altogether his sons and his daughters numbered thirty-three). NIV 15 These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, besides his daughter Dinah. These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all. RSV 16 The sons of Gad: Ziph'ion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Aro'di, and Are'li. NIV 16 The sons of Gad: Zephon, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli. RSV 17 The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beri'ah, with Serah their sister. And the sons of Beri'ah: Heber and Mal'chi-el NIV 17 The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malkiel. RSV 18 (these are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob--sixteen persons). NIV 18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah--sixteen in all. RSV 19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin. NIV 19 The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. RSV 20 And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manas'seh and E'phraim, whom As'enath, the daughter of Poti'phera the priest of On, bore to him. NIV 20 In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. RSV 21 And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Na'aman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard NIV 21 The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard. RSV 22 (these are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob--fourteen persons in all). NIV 22 These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob--fourteen in all. RSV 23 The sons of Dan: Hushim. NIV 23 The son of Dan: Hushim. RSV 24 The sons of Naph'tali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem NIV 24 The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem. RSV 25 (these are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob--seven persons in all). NIV 25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel--seven in all. RSV 26 All the persons belonging to Jacob who came into Egypt, who were his own offspring, not including Jacob's sons' wives, were sixty-six persons in all; NIV 26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob--those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons' wives--numbered sixty-six persons. RSV 27 and the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two; all the persons of the house of Jacob, that came into Egypt, were seventy. NIV 27 With the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob's family, which went to Egypt, were seventy in all. RSV 28 He sent Judah before him to Joseph, to appear before him in Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. NIV 28 Now Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When they arrived in the region of Goshen, RSV 29 Then Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to meet Israel his father in Goshen; and he presented himself to him, and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. NIV 29 Joseph had his chariot made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time. RSV 30 Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die, since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive." NIV 30 Israel said to Joseph, "Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive." RSV 31 Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me; NIV 31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me. RSV 32 and the men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.' NIV 32 The men are shepherds; they tend livestock, and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.' RSV 33 When Pharaoh calls you, and says, 'What is your occupation?' NIV 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, 'What is your occupation?' RSV 34 you shall say, 'Your servants have been keepers of cattle from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,' in order that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians." NIV 34 you should answer, 'Your servants have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians."
