Genesis 9

CEB 1 God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "Be fertile, multiply, and fill the earth. NIV 1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. CEB 2 All of the animals on the earth will fear you and dread you—all the birds in the skies, everything crawling on the ground, and all of the sea's fish. They are in your power. NIV 2 The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. CEB 3 Everything that lives and moves will be your food. Just as I gave you the green grasses, I now give you everything. NIV 3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. CEB 4 However, you must not eat meat with its life, its blood, in it. NIV 4 "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. CEB 5 I will surely demand your blood for a human life, from every living thing I will demand it. From humans, from a man for his brother, I will demand something for a human life. NIV 5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. CEB 6 Whoever sheds human blood, by a human his blood will be shed; for in the divine image God made human beings. NIV 6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man. CEB 7 As for you, be fertile and multiply. Populate the earth and multiply in it." NIV 7 As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it." CEB 8 God said to Noah and to his sons with him, NIV 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: CEB 9 "I am now setting up my covenant with you, with your descendants, NIV 9 "I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you CEB 10 and with every living being with you—with the birds, with the large animals, and with all the animals of the earth, leaving the ark with you. NIV 10 and with every living creature that was with you--the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you--every living creature on earth. CEB 11 I will set up my covenant with you so that never again will all life be cut off by floodwaters. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth." NIV 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth." CEB 12 God said, "This is the symbol of the covenant that I am drawing up between me and you and every living thing with you, on behalf of every future generation. NIV 12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: CEB 13 I have placed my bow in the clouds; it will be the symbol of the covenant between me and the earth. NIV 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. CEB 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, NIV 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, CEB 15 I will remember the covenant between me and you and every living being among all the creatures. Floodwaters will never again destroy all creatures. NIV 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. CEB 16 The bow will be in the clouds, and upon seeing it I will remember the enduring covenant between God and every living being of all the earth's creatures." NIV 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth." CEB 17 God said to Noah, "This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set up between me and all creatures on earth." NIV 17 So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth." CEB 18 Noah's sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth came out of the ark. Now Ham was Canaan's father. NIV 18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) CEB 19 These were Noah's three sons, and from them the whole earth was populated. NIV 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth. CEB 20 Noah, a farmer, made a new start and planted a vineyard. NIV 20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. CEB 21 He drank some of the wine, became drunk, and took off his clothes in his tent. NIV 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. CEB 22 Ham, Canaan's father, saw his father naked and told his two brothers who were outside. NIV 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside. CEB 23 Shem and Japheth took a robe, threw it over their shoulders, walked backward, and covered their naked father without looking at him because they turned away. NIV 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father's nakedness. CEB 24 When Noah woke up from his wine, he discovered what his youngest son had done to him. NIV 24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, CEB 25 He said, "Cursed be Canaan: the lowest servant he will be for his brothers." NIV 25 he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers." CEB 26 He also said, "Bless the LORD, the God of Shem; Canaan will be his servant. NIV 26 He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. CEB 27 May God give space to Japheth; he will live in Shem's tents, and Canaan will be his servant." NIV 27 May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave." CEB 28 After the flood, Noah lived 350 years. NIV 28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. CEB 29 In all, Noah lived 950 years; then he died. NIV 29 Altogether, Noah lived 950 years, and then he died.
