Genesis 9

GNT 1 God blessed Noah and his sons and said, "Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth. NIV 1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. GNT 2 All the animals, birds, and fish will live in fear of you. They are all placed under your power. NIV 2 The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. GNT 3 Now you can eat them, as well as green plants; I give them all to you for food. NIV 3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. GNT 4 The one thing you must not eat is meat with blood still in it; I forbid this because the life is in the blood. NIV 4 "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. GNT 5 If anyone takes human life, he will be punished. I will punish with death any animal that takes a human life. NIV 5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. GNT 6 Human beings were made like God, so whoever murders one of them will be killed by someone else. NIV 6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man. GNT 7 "You must have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth." NIV 7 As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it." GNT 8 God said to Noah and his sons, NIV 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: GNT 9 "I am now making my covenant with you and with your descendants, NIV 9 "I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you GNT 10 and with all living beings - all birds and all animals - everything that came out of the boat with you. NIV 10 and with every living creature that was with you--the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you--every living creature on earth. GNT 11 With these words I make my covenant with you: I promise that never again will all living beings be destroyed by a flood; never again will a flood destroy the earth. NIV 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth." GNT 12 As a sign of this everlasting covenant which I am making with you and with all living beings, NIV 12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: GNT 13 I am putting my bow in the clouds. It will be the sign of my covenant with the world. NIV 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. GNT 14 Whenever I cover the sky with clouds and the rainbow appears, NIV 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, GNT 15 I will remember my promise to you and to all the animals that a flood will never again destroy all living beings. NIV 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. GNT 16 When the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between me and all living beings on earth. NIV 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth." GNT 17 That is the sign of the promise which I am making to all living beings." NIV 17 So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth." NIV 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside. GNT 23 Then Shem and Japheth took a robe and held it behind them on their shoulders. They walked backward into the tent and covered their father, keeping their faces turned away so as not to see him naked. NIV 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father's nakedness. GNT 24 When Noah sobered up and learned what his youngest son had done to him, NIV 24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, GNT 25 he said, "A curse on Canaan! He will be a slave to his brothers. NIV 25 he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers." GNT 26 Give praise to the Lord, the God of Shem! Canaan will be the slave of Shem. NIV 26 He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. GNT 27 May God cause Japheth to increase! May his descendants live with the people of Shem! Canaan will be the slave of Japheth."
